WEEKEND WEATHER--As I left my house Saturday morning with a car loaded full of chairs, tents, weights, and raffle items, I was met with a nasty, wet surprise as I traveled down the road, this was not going to be a fun Bald Eagle's Day in the rain and my mood was turning more dour as the miles went by and my wipers had to be turned up a little higher. Needless to say, I was relieved to turn my frown upside down, as when I got to the Elochoman Road turn off, the pavement suddenly turned dry! Sunday arrived with a bit of dampness and much...

A next big step down a “presumptive path” toward phasing out non-tribal commercial gill-nets on the lower Columbia River will be the deployment late this summer of 10 permit holders equipped with beach and purse seines, equipment that had been outlawed on the river for more than 60 years. The late fall salmon fisheries stem from fishery management policies adopted in 2013 by the Oregon and Washington fish and wildlife commissions “intended to promote the conservation and recovery of wild salmon and steelhead and provide fishery-related benef...
The budget for the 2014-2015 school year was approved at July’s Wahkiakum School District’s Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday. The reserve in the general fund will be $200,000, approximately $455,000 less than two years ago, and staff will be tightening their belts. “The game has changed,” Superintendent Bob Garrett said. “Everyone is going to have a budget to live with.” Two big worries have the school district wondering how to generate more revenue. The first issue was aging technology....

Two Grays River Valley residents on Tuesday asked the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners to draft an ordinance governing public nudity in the county. Christine and Robert Symonds said a new resident of the Valley is a nudist, and travelers often see him outside his residence or even along the county road. Robert Symonds said he had talked to the man when he first moved into the area and was told the man intended to build a fence to screen his property. However, the fence has not yet been built. "You're not the only ones on your road who...

Long before we became a territory, this land was home to Indian tribes – and their stories are fascinating. Native voices reveal a challenging and i...
Another Bald Eagle Day is in the books. By midday on Saturday, it was a bright warm humid one. That didn’t stop a few thousand people from coming into town to take in a parade and join in the fun. Local firefighters, deputies and search and rescue volunteers were well represented in the parade as they showed off their freshly washed fire engines and fast cars. Children sat on curbs waiting for the continual shower of candy coming their way as parade entrants passed. There were clowns and c...
To The Eagle: As many of you know, we had a disastrous house fire on July 9 at our home on Altoona-Pillar Rock Rd. I want everyone to know that we are going to be fine, thanks to the love and generosity of so many friends, neighbors and family. It is humbling to be loved by so many. We would like to thank the wonderful people from all the fire departments who responded to this fire. Thanks, guys, for saving Shirley Cantrell's (age 92) new home next to mine and also for saving the mountainside and our shop. The house wasn't so lucky, but we...
We have some changes in store for readers of The Wahkiakum County Eagle. This will have little effect for readers of our print edition, but for readers who follow us online, we have good and bad new. First the good news: The new website will have more content. It will be easier to navigate. It will have formats for PC's, tablets, pads and phones. We'll be uploading stories and photos more often than we do now. The bad news is that at some point, and even though I hate to do it, we'll put up a paywall and begin charging fees to access that...

Wahkiakum County's Volunteers in Public Service (VIPS) say people don't need a good reason to throw a block party, but here's one anyway: August 5 is America's National Night Out, an annual community-building happening that raises awareness about crime and drug prevention. It is also a time for promoting police-community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie. In years past, VIPS and the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office have sponsored a local event. This year, however, the focus is on individual neighborhood events. As Sheriff Mark Howie...
