Renee Lynn Brostad died at home in Oak Harbor on July 10, 2013. She was born as Patrick Shane DeHart on June 13, 1977 in Fresno, Calif., to Alex and Linda DeHart. Patrick graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1996. He then served eight years in the U.S. Navy. Renee enjoyed drawing, making things from Legos and building and flying remote control airplanes. George F. Hanigan was born February 11, 1938 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon to George Henry (Hank) Hanigan and Elizabeth D. (Betty Driscoll) Hanigan. He died July 11, 2013. George was a fourth generation Wahkiakum resident and a third generation local attorney. His great grandparents homesteaded in 1870 in the Elochoman Valley. His grandfather George F. Melvin and Carol (Magnuson) Ross are celebrating 65 years of marriage. The couple were wed July 23, 1948. Howard and Joyce Magnuson served as witnesses, and Ellis Koven was the officiating clergyman. The J.A. Wendt Parent Teacher Organization will be selling school supply kits again this year. There will be two different kits available; a K-2 and 3-5 kit. Cowlitz County is trying to divest itself of county parks that don't produce revenue, and officials there have talked of shedding County Line Park. Commissioners of Port District 2 of Wahkiakum County, who operate Skamokawa Vista and Svensen parks, met Tuesday and said they are interested in the possibility of taking over County Line. Three issues quickly rose to the forefront last Thursday at the July meeting of the board of commissioners of Port District 1. Because of budget issues, Cowlitz County has been trying to shed four parks from their list of responsibilities. A King County Superior Court judge ruled July 11 that the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) must produce full environmental impact statements (EIS) before starting thinning logging near marbled murrelet habitat. The Cathlamet Town Council acted on fireworks complaints, sewer rates, and a variety of other issues when it met Monday for its monthly meeting. Mayor George Wehrfritz reported he had received an unusually high number of complaints from Cathlamet residents about July 4 fireworks that were unusually loud and lasted very late at night.
