  • Get ready for Bald Eagle Days weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

MIXED BAG--It depended on where you were this weekend as to the weather that you had, as some places were sunny, hot and dry and others were cloudy, misty and overcast all day and some had a little of both. Even as this work week begins, we've had showers in West Valley in the morning hours, which only seemed to let up as long as I didn't try to weed the flower beds, so if you had a sunny day, it was probably because I gave up trying to weed anything and came in the house! If anyone wanted to invent something, it would be the...

  • Sheriff's Report - July 15, 2010

    Jul 15, 2010

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: July 5--8:59 p.m. Cowlitz County requested Wahkiakum officers check a Cathlamet residence for a vehicle loaned by a Cowlitz man to a niece who hadn't returned it after four days; the vehicle wasn't at the residence. July 6--12:04 a.m. After stopping a vehicle on SR 4 just west of Cathlamet, an officer arrested an occupant. 12:52 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Hillcrest Drive woman with chest...

  • Melody R. Music

    Jul 15, 2010

Melody (Mel) Rose Music of Centralia went to live in heaven with her loving Father on June 25, 2010. Mel was born on August 26, 1953 in Chehalis. After nursing school she spent 29 years in Cathlamet. She was a faithful member of the Cathlamet Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mel was one of the sweetest and loving people around and had many great friends. The great friends she made at her apartment building will miss her greatly as they became her second family. Melody was preceded in death by her father Ernest H. Music. Survivors include her...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Jul 15, 2010

The Fairgrounds was a busy place last weekend. We had horses in the arena, dogs and cats in the T-building, bargain shoppers in the Youth Building and a concrete pad poured for the exotic barn. The Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic was a huge success. Dr. Lisa Bartel had 52 animals brought to her clinic in the T-building! There is one more clinic scheduled for August 7, if you have some questions about the clinic and your animal, call Dr. Bartel at 1-360-484-7228. The Rummage Sale has been very successful at turning donated items into dollars...

  • On The Scene

    Jon Dearmore, Wah. Co. Undersheriff|Jul 15, 2010

Editor's Note: This is a continuation of a series of articles submitted by Undersheriff Jon Dearmore, who is currently a candidate for the office of Wahkiakum County Sheriff. On June 10, 2010, we were involved in a Regional Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill. The fictitious scenario included a suspect who had shot and killed a person and wounded several others at a residence in Cathlamet. The suspect then fled towards Cowlitz County, where he continued his rampage. The MCI drill then continued throughout the region. The focus of the drill was...

  • Norris, Grasseth run for sheriff

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

Three men have announced their candidacies for Wahkiakum County Sheriff. Undersheriff Jon Dearmore, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, hopes to take the reins of the department he's worked in for 17 years; The Eagle profiled his candidacy last week. The remaining candidates are Josh Grasseth, a former deputy in the department, and Troy Norris, a former reserve deputy sheriff. Both speak of moving the department into community policing partnerships with the public. Both would like to see fitness programs for officers, and both said they're...

  • New sales tax hits gum, candy and more

    Stevan Morgain|Jul 15, 2010

June ended with Wahkiakum shoppers paying a higher sales tax on candy, gum, bottled water and some snack foods and non-micro beers. Labeled “candy tax” by the media, the tax is part of $800 million tax package Washington Democrats approved early this year to help close a nearly $3 billion dollar hole in the state budget. The state budget office says tax represents about a one-fifth of a down payment on what the state needs to balance the budget. The Washington Department of Revenue said it created a database for Washington retailers that out...

  • Love of rocks brings man to new career

    Stevan Morgain|Jul 15, 2010

Steve Anderson has rocks on the brain. He’s collected rocks since he was a child. As a woodsman he collected stones while hiking, hunting and fishing along the quiet trails and streams that wend their ways through the forests of Washington and Oregon. Today Steve is retired but he still keeps a close eye on the ground wherever he goes. Anderson spent the first half of his life working in the forests. “I was a logger for the first 17 years of my working life,” said Steve. “Even then I’d keep and eye out for pretty stones." Anderson said he e...

  • Insurance company adds Cathlamet office

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

Longview businessman and Deep River resident Walter Deege is opening a branch of his Deege Insurance and Financial Services business in Cathlamet. Deege and a work crew have been remodeling a house at 100 Main Street and will hold a grand opening next Monday. In an interview this week, Deege said the new office is part of an expansion that will also include an office in Lewis County. The moves are intended to improve customer service. "We have a large customer base in Wahkiakum County," Deege said. "I thought, instead of them coming to...

  • Commissioners hear experts speak about biosolids

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

Wahkiakum County will have an ordinance regulating the application of biosolids--processed human waste--but how restrictive it will be remains to be seen. County commissioners hosted an hour-long seminar on biosolids on Tuesday, hearing processors, regulators, scientists and consumers in an effort to learn more about the process. Commissioners Blair Brady and Dan Cothren expressed reservations about the application of biosolids to farm land before the program started, and they had those reservations when the program was over. Brady said he...

  • Survey response will help restore town vitality

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: To the 25 families living in the town of Cathlamet who so far have completed and returned the recent survey, I thank you. This survey is designed to help restore the vitality of stores and other businesses in Cathlamet and reduce the number of vacant storefronts. For cost considerations, this first survey was sent only to those people who receive a water bill directly from the town of Cathlamet. It is recognized, however, that the success of businesses within the town affects everyone in the county so I am working on proper ways...

  • Speed limit ignorance will lead to tragedy

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle, The posted speed limit is 20 mph in a school zone, so what's the problem on Clover Street? Posted speed limit is 20 mph, just like in a school zone and there are lots of kids. Is it that some people don't feel that the speed limit applies to them? If so, I'd love to hear their reasons. On that dead end street, can a few extra seconds be that important? I guess we will have to wait until something tragic happens before they get it. Roger Bucholtz Cathlamet...

  • Let's see naysayers do something positive

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: Recently, we have been treated to many letters to The Eagle focusing on projects that the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council and the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce have worked hard on and supported. We are told by the writers that defeating these efforts is cause for joy. As one of the people who works very hard for our community, I challenge those who work so hard to stop projects to roll up their sleeves and find a way to get involved in helping the community. It is not enough to simply sit at home and say, “I have g...

  • Health analysis clarifies thinking

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: The amazing facts and figures in the county health analysis on last week's front page sure did clarify my thinking. I thought that our slightly high incidence of coronary disease and stuff was because half of us are over 60, but now I find out it's because of low intake of spinach and rutabagas. The fact that such produce is not available must also come as a reall shock to the folks who run the wonderful produce department at Cathlamet Market and our world class farmers market on Puget Island. I was also under the misapprehension...

  • Biosolids ruling a "slap in the face"

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: I am opposed to the disposal of untreated human waste through land application. Since I am a resident of Grays River valley, I am especially opposed to the land application of untreated human waste in the valley. It is unsafe and unwise on several levels. If that were not the case why have we been prohibited for years from constructing outhouses near wells or close to streams and rivers? What about the studies linking the introduction of human medicines into aquatic environments with aberrant morphological changes in amphibian...

  • Biosolids don’t stink

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: “Oh my God, it’s pooh!” These were the first words uttered when visiting the Renton wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the first time as an engineering student. That reaction is reminiscent of the knee-jerk reaction I’m observing today among Wahkiakum residents. I have studied biosolids a lot since then; and a dear colleague just completed his PhD on the matter. Let me attempt to explain why Class A biosolids should not be included in the County’s proposed ban. A biosolid itself is the solid material from the clarifica...

  • Naselle gets ready for Finn-Am Folk Festival

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

After another week of “kinda summer” it makes you remember why this is the most wonderful place to live. Even though my husband hasn’t yet been able to paint his ‘59 Ford pickup because of the humidity, things are also looking up for that project. I see much activity in the fields and gardens, so that is more good sign. Actually I love the rain but some sun is always welcome. News from Naselle: Activity is ramping up for the Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle. The three day family friendly event will take place July 23 through July 25...
