    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

GOT SUMMER--Everyone was happy to see the sun come out last week. It almost got a bit warm for me, but hey, it was nice to have dry for a change. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 12-18 are Samantha McClain, Justin Perkins, Megan Miller, Marietta Montgomery, Jerry Ledtke, Sharrel Mooers, Jamie Kincaid, Cameron...

Twenty customers have received rebates for installing energy-efficient ductless heat pumps, insulation, windows, and/or refrigerators since the funding period began in October 2011, reported PUD employee Lia Sealund, who is in charge of the PUD’s conservation programs. • Pioneer Deep River church refurbished

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

When Mark Erickson began the restoration project of the exterior of the Deep River Lutheran Church, he had his work cut out for him. “There was about an inch of moss covering the building,” recalled Erickson who has donated both his time and energy to preserving the National Historical Site. With private funds collected by personal donations and fundraisers, the church is coming back to life. “We did a solid week of prepping the building,” said Erickson who, together with Richard Kandoll, went about wrapping windows and doors in plastic...

  • DNR plans change for a better future

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

When it comes to managing state-managed timberlands in southwestern Washington, science, technology and cooperation are the key to success for the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The agency manages timber for a variety of trusts ranging from state prisons and public schools to counties such as Wahkiakum. In the early 20th century, timber barons logged the land and walked away, leaving unpaid property taxes. Wahkiakum and other counties foreclosed the land, and in the 1940's the legislature created Forest Board Transfer trusts in...

  • Commissioners handle light agenda

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

A short handed board of Wahkiakum County Commissioners handled a light load of business on Tuesday. The board voted to affirm the distribution of PUD Privilege Tax as recommended by Treasurer Marlena Silva, subject to comparison with values for 2011. The tax, 3/4 of 1 percent of the gross collections for Wahkiakum PUD, would have been slightly over $43,000, with $5,499.84 going to the Town of Cathlamet and $37,535.12 going to the county. Stanley Sanitary Service submitted the only bid for hauling of the county's recycling boxes. The bid came...

  • Why do students prefer online classes?

    Jul 12, 2012

To The Eagle: I have been mulling this over for a while now and the more I think about the trouble at Wahkiakum High School, the more I feel like the administration is putting parents up against the wall. Last week's paper talked about how Mr. Casler, at the last school board meeting, said that there was a problem with too many students taking online Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) classes. But if you put it up to the students, they feel like they would rather take English on a computer than from a teacher accused of striking a child or...

  • Obamacare nothing but a nasty tax

    Jul 12, 2012

To The Eagle: Debating Obamacare with respect to the commerce clause of the constitution was a messy process, since that poor abused clause is among the most bent and battered by previous incarnations of the Supreme Court, and any finding might have left stray parts of this monstrous law standing. Chief Justice Roberts' brilliant move just lets the law stand but properly identifies it as a tax -- a huge, ugly tax. The current squabble among pols and pundits as to whether it is the largest tax increase in history is beside the point. It is a...

  • Head to the National Night Out August 7

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 12, 2012

I guess it’s time to get back to work and the real world after an absolutely wonderful week with family and folks we consider to be a part of our family. We had the pleasure of housing all six of our kids and their spouses or significant other, all of our grandchildren and a great-grandson. Altogether we had about 54 people and 12 dogs in our little tent city. The weather cleared up nicely after the first night of showers and the rest of the time it was beautiful. I hope everyone had even half as nice a holiday as we did. Now it is really quiet...
