An Elochoman Valley resident fired shots Monday to fend off an attempted burglary. According to Sheriff Mark Howie, two men were seen putting items into a truck at a large storage barn in the 500 block of Elochoman Valley Road in the early morning hours of July 6. There had been a recent burglary at the address, and the owner and some of his neighbors were on alert. On Tuesday, the Columbia River Compact approved two 12-hour openings for commercial fishers on the Columbia River. The first ran from last night to today (Wednesday and Thursday). The second will start at 7 p.m. July 14 and close at 7 a.m. July 15. An eight-hour non-Indian commercial fishing period occurred on June 17. Catch included 2,101 Chinook and 243 sockeye. Christian “CJ” Lorenzo, 17, was arrested on March 20, 2015 for his involvement in the theft of chickens from a Puget Island residence and the subsequent sale of the chickens at a Woodland auction house. Lorenzo was also being held for the theft of a firearm, for a stolen laptop found in his home, and for possession of a controlled substance. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday cancelled the eight-ton weight limit for the ferry Oscar B. Construction of a new loading ramp has been completed at the Westport ramp, so Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen recommended the commissioners remove the eight-ton limit, which was established to accommodate the temporary dock which the ferry used while the new ramp was constructed. Women can learn the basics of fishing, hunting and other outdoor skills at a September weekend workshop that includes sessions led by several Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) experts. The annual workshop is scheduled Sept.18-20 at Camp Waskowitz near North Bend. The Washington legislature has budgeted $835,000 for habitat restoration and fisher development in Wahkiakum County. The funding is part of $11.7 million in projects allocated for marine resource committees, nonprofit organizations, tribes and agencies for restoration and habitat work. On August 3-7, WSU Master Gardeners will host Camp Luqal Luqal in the morning for youth in grades 1-3 from 9 a.m. to noon.
