  • Summer weather is hard to adjust to

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

HEATING UP--By the time you read this, we are supposed to be experiencing some hot, hot, hot weather and I can hear people complaining already. First it's too wet and cold and then it's too hot, it would have been nice to have a week of dry 75 to 80 degree weather, without going from one extreme to the other. A week ago we were down to 39 degrees one night! At any rate, make sure you take all the precautions that you should during this heat wave, as we will all need to keep our exposure to the sun limited. Wear sun hats, sun screen, drink lots...

When you go to the fairgrounds and pick up exhibitor tags and cards in the next few weeks, be sure to take a look at all the activities that are going on. • Showdown set for sheriff candidates -- Undersheriff ready to move up

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

With Sheriff Dan Bardsley retiring at the end of this year, it's time for a change of command in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's office. Two men filed as candidates for the position during the filing week in June--current Undersheriff Jon Dearmore and Rosburg resident Troy Norris, and last weekend, signs appeared for a write-in candidate, former Deputy Sheriff Josh Grasseth. The Eagle will publish profiles of candidates in the next few weeks. We start with Jon Dearmore. Dearmore has over 20 years experience in law enforcement. He started in the...

  • PUD commission starts rate hearings

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners approved water rate increases for customers from both the Puget Island and Western Wahkiakum Water Systems at their meeting July 6. Commissioner Bob Jungers commented that because of a locked door, the Western Wahkiakum Water System rate hearing scheduled for June 29 was held on the tailgate of his truck, and low attendance meant “(the tailgate) wasn’t overcrowded.” He said he interpreted a lack of public comment at that event to mean that Westend residents were satisfied that the rate increases were neces...

  • High school graduation will get tougher by 2013

    Stevan Morgain|Jul 8, 2010

More than 90 percent of the state’s high school seniors passed the reading and writing portions of Washington State’s new High School Proficiency Exam this year but the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) says scores in math are still down. Only about 70 percent of seniors passed their math test this year. The OSPI said it also expects that test scores will continue to drop statewide as it reorganizes its graduation requirements, and continues to make changes to testing requirements for graduation. To graduate from hig...

  • Health analysis: Residents should change habits

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

Wahkiakum County residents need to stop smoking, get more exercise, and eat more fruits and vegetables. These are the conclusions health department officials presented to the county board of commissioners Tuesday. Judy Bright, Health and Human Services director, and Dr. Jennifer Vines, deputy health officer presented an analysis of chronic disease risk factors in the county in the monthly board of health meeting on Tuesday. "As our local community contemplates health care reform, it is important to remind ourselves of the major determinants of...

  • Contractor ceases seeking waiver for ferry ramp steel

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

The contractor which ran afoul of the federal Buy America Act by incorporating pontoons made in Mexico into the Puget Island ferry replacement ramp has ceased seeking a waiver to the requirements. Bergerson Construction of Astoria notified Wahkiakum County officials in June that they would drop efforts to avoid having to replace the pontoons at their own expense. The company contracted with another company in Ohio to construct the new pontoon. The Ohio company, in turn, hired a Mexican firm to build the pontoon, and that company used a mixture...

  • Candidate wants to reduce state spending

    Stevan Morgain|Jul 8, 2010

The free-for-all of Washington’s top-two primary creates a place holder for would-be politicians, including Tim Sutinen who says he is aligned with the “Lower Taxes Party.” A Longview businessman, Sutinen said he’s running for office as an independent conservative against state Rep. Brian Blake, an Aberdeen Democrat whose district includes Longview, Kelso, Cowlitz County and Wahkiakum and Pacific counties. “I’m running for office because I’m tired of the out of control spending which leads to never-ending tax increases and job losses,” said Sut...

  • Endorsement crosses political party lines

    Jul 8, 2010

To The Eagle: I am a Republican, but there are worthy Democrats who keep their promises to the people that placed them in office. I am not in the habit of endorsing Democrats unless they show the following traits: 1. Truthfulness. 2. Honesty. 3. Trustworthy. 4. Who are incorruptible by affluent outside influence. 5. Who truly represent their constituents. For all of the above reasons, I am endorsing Blair Brady for re-election. In these times of little money, I believe that Blair fully understands and has proven his ability to tighten the...

  • Candidates checking in all over our county

    Jul 8, 2010

To The Eagle: The snap, crackle and pop of Independence Day pyrotechnics echoing up and down the lower Columbia felt unusually festive and celebratory this year. Seems our little backwoods neighborhood has three major wins to crow about as we bid a not-too-fond but very relieved farewell to NorthernStar's LNG, ShoreBank's NHA and also the D.I.P. (Dreaded Incubator Project). Not too surprising, really, that our merry band of rustics and hayseeds is leading the trend that is gathering momentum all over the county: killing inappropriate...

  • Monday is deadline for biosolids comments

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

It was a wonderful weekend despite the rain and unpredictable weather. With more than 20 family members staying for a few days, we were either cooking or playing, and had a few tents set up for extra sleeping quarters. It’s so nice to have this many family members in the same place at the same time. Lots of motorcycle riding, swimming, Frisbee golf, roasting marshmallows for s’mores, fireworks, and all the other fun things we enjoy, with 78 acres to enjoy it on. In addition to all the people we had six members of our dog family as well. New...
