  • Perez at RM38:

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 6, 2023

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Congresswoman for Washington's Third District, fielded questions at an informal town hall billed as Pints with Perez at River Mile 38 brewery last Thursday. "A lot of my colleagues have basically been in politics their whole life," Perez started. "I was running an auto repair and machine shop with my husband. You go to these committee hearings and people are repeating talking points and you are not hearing a lot of things that I hear from my neighbors on topics. It's...

As of July 4, all land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning is banned until further notice. This burn ban does not apply to federally managed land within Wahkiakum County. Diana Zimmerman|Jul 6, 2023

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is busy getting ready for the 2023 Bald Eagle Days festivities, coming Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15. “We are hoping we have a handle on it,” Assistant Director Dan Lorenzen said. “Last year Monica [Budd, former chamber director] got thrown into it, and this year we have us who have never done it before trying to put it together. We are hopeful that it is successful.” Lorenzen is currently the veteran in the office, which includes a new Chamber Directo...

  • Vaccine clinic on hiatus

    Jul 6, 2023

Because of staffing issues, the vaccine clinic hosted by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services every Monday and Wednesday is on hiatus as of July 5. The public nurse at WHHS recently tendered her resignation, and the department is actively seeking a new registered nurse. The clinic will resume when the position is filled. WHHS encourages anyone who hasn’t already been vaccinated to contact their personal medical provider and get scheduled for a vaccine. For more information, the health department can be reached at 360-795-6207 Monday through F...

  • Most Americans support safe and legal abortions

    Jul 6, 2023

To The Eagle: Last week marked the first anniversary of the reversal of Roe Vs Wade, which stripped women of the essential 50 year old constitutional right to safe and legal abortion. Access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion and birth control, is a pivotal step on the road to equality for women in this democracy. Over 60% of Americans support the right to a safe and legal abortion. After Texas banned most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, a new analysis from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that...

  • Much good progress has been made

    Jul 6, 2023

To The Eagle: If you haven't already figured out, electing a president goes far beyond his time in office. The Supreme Court of the United States got three who lied to get elected, after Mitch (the Turtle), through corrupt methods, got three far-right lifetime memberships in SCOTUS. Having six Catholics, now, in my opinion, ruling on their faith, not the Constitution, after proclaiming presidence, in order to be elected. Term limits and ethics should be implemented, not self-done! SCOTUS now has the lowest numbers of trust in history; way to go...

  • They all need to be impeached

    Jul 6, 2023

To The Eagle: In 2016 our national debt was around $19 trillion. Now it is over $31 trillion and still rising. The varmints in DC just keep on ‘charging’ with money we don’t have. They don’t care how much they ‘charge’ because they know they don’t have to pay it. Their salary comes out of our pockets with their ‘Visa.’ They got it made. How much have they ‘charged’ us on Trump’s false witch hunt, Ukraine, their travels and reimbursements? How much have we spent on the Biden regime’s criminal activities? None? It’s just all on Trump? If the M...

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 6, 2023

If you are looking for an opportunity to stretch and grow in a supportive environment, you might consider Let it Be Yoga with Linda Krohn, who is offering a class every Wednesday morning from 10-11 a.m. at the River Rat on Broadway. Krohn has been practicing yoga for 15 years and teaching for the last four. She got her start in the practice when a girlfriend talked her into joining a hot yoga class in Puyallup. "I thought I was going to die," Krohn remembered, laughing. She didn't, obviously....

  • Enjoy Bald Eagle Days next weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 6, 2023

TOASTY--The warm Summer weather that everyone was hoping for has arrived and I hope you’ve been able to enjoy them without getting “fried” in the process! Sometimes the nice breeze fools us into thinking it’s not that hot out there but then wind up looking as “red as a beet,” which is not a good thing! With the hottest of this week's temperatures having already taken place, (supposedly) then this coming week's temps scheduled for the low 70s should be just about right! FIRE DANGER--We’d like to thank all of our fire departments and volunteer...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Jul 6, 2023

Last week's photo of Noreen Fitts showed Noreen with her new granddaughter, but Bob Jungers questioned me on that, and he's right. She is Noreen's great granddaughter. A few days ago, I talked with a really tough guy. I need trees trimmed behind my house because they've grown so much that the trail going up the hill looks like a tunnel. I had an idea of who I should ask to do it because I asked others for names of those who could do it and they always gave me the same name. I had seen him...

  • Perez goes all in for robotics team

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 6, 2023

If you thought Marie Gluesenkamp Perez didn't keep her promises, you'd be all wet. As the story goes, a member of the Wahkiakum School District's robotics team asked the Congresswoman for Washington's Third District if the team could push her in the pool if they won the qualifier for this year's International SeaPerch underwater robotics competition. The year before, they celebrated a win at the inaugural qualifier with a dunking of their coach, Ron Wright. She was heard to say yes, and in...

  • PUD and volunteer fire fighters respond to vehicle, brush fire on KM

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 6, 2023

In the early afternoon on Friday, June 30, the driver of a minivan went off the side of SR 4 and into a ditch on the east side of KM. He was reported to be carrying cans of fuel to a haying project on the Westend. Luckily for him, a crew from the Wahkiakum County PUD was passing by at the time. "They were the first on scene for a motor vehicle accident," PUD General Manager Dan Kay said at a meeting on Wednesday. "It sounds like it was a pretty significant one. We do a lot of safety training....
