Baylee Olsen played in the recent Washington/North Idaho All-State basketball game in Spokane. She represented Class 2B West Side. Despite losing to the East Side 77-71, she was named Most Valuable Player of the game with 10 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots, five assists, and three steals. GETTING BETTER--As I began this column, the weather wasn't so great but by the evening hours, it dried up and it wasn't too bad. Allen Cameron Edmondson, 86, passed away June 29 at his Puget Island home. The son of Allen Candler Edmondson and Josie Williams Edmondson, he was born December 21, 1927, in Pearl River, Louisiana. He helped operate the family store and farm in Slidell, La. He served in the Army in WWII and was stationed in Adak, Alaska. After the war, he used the GI Bill to graduate with a degree in journalism from Louisiana State University. He married Ruth Davis Edmondson, and they were together over 50 years. Cathlamet's 33rd Bald Eagle Festival is just over two weeks away; the festival runs Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, this year. The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors met for two hours on June 25 to continue discussion from the regular June 17 meeting about class sizes and the possibility of hiring more teachers. According to Superintendent Bob Garrett, no action was taken, but another special school board meeting was called for July 17 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss where cuts might be made to the preliminary 2014-2015 budget in order to free up money for additional staffing. After taking some time off for some necessary repairs, Redmen Hall had its grand re-opening on Saturday from 12-4 p.m., with refreshments and a net mending demonstration from local fishermen Kent Martin and Gary Emery. Shane Pfenniger, line crew foreman for the Wahkiakum PUD, took time out of his day on Tuesday to share with the PUD board of commissioners what he and his co-workers had learned during a recent visit from National Metering and Technical Services, LLC. The company audits meters and provides training in meter installment, repair and use. Mayor Dale Jacobson has placed a moratorium on the over two-hour parking ticketing on Main Street in Cathlamet. The Cathlamet Town Council adopted its annual 6-Year Street Improvement Plan during a special meeting last Thursday afternoon. The state Department of Transportation requires the annual update of the plan. The plan prioritizes projects which can be started if there is funding available for them. As I finish up this column, the temperature is climbing and it looks like a really warm day for this Tuesday. Greetings from the Fair Office. Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. Last weekend the 4-H had their yearly horse camp. I understand everyone had a good time. Cemetery District #1 issued a reminder this week to the public concerning pets and decorations. No pets are allowed in the cemetery. The cemetery district will not be responsible for lost or stolen articles, including vases, markers, name bars, etc. A previous policy is still in effect concerning articles placed at the cemetery. Flowers and decorations must be removed 10 days after placement, and they ask that items not be placed around head stones and markers, as they impede the mowing process....
