SUMMER?--The first true day of Summer wasn't too bad, nor was the next, but then came the weekend and a front moved in with lots of wind beginning on Thursday afternoon, with some rain nailing us on Saturday morning. By evening, the sky had cleared and it wasn't too bad, so while it wasn't perfect, it was certainly better than we expected. Several days have begun wet and then turned out decent, which has caused a muggy effect, but that beats some of the other weather issues that parts of our country are dealing with that are far worse, like...

On June 19 during a Wahkiakum School District board meeting, the directors authorized staff to implement a proposal for an organized time for teachers to confer and collaborate. The decision came on the heels of a meeting held June 11 when a group gathered at JA Wendt Elementary to further discuss the concept of organized teacher collaboration time. A committee led by Stephanie Leitz, current K-12 Title 1/Learning Assistance Program, English Language Learning, and Alternative Learning Experience programs instructor and incoming Wahkiakum High...
Naselle/Grays River Valley parents are excited at the prospect of their children beginning half-day courses in Mandarin Chinese. “The reality is, for a program like this to come to our area is something we cannot pass up. We need to instill that entrepreneurial attitude in our kids early so they don’t feel stuck in a rural community,” said Marijane Anderson whose son William will enter kindergarten in the fall. “This program is a gift and I’m excited that (husband) Wes and I can send our son to a school that hopefully will offer this. We...
“It would be devastating to lose the nursing home,” said Audrey Hedman, whose husband, Cleave, has been a patient at Columbia View Care Center for ten months now. “Before Cleave was strong enough to come to Cathlamet, he had to spend a couple of months at Northwest Continuum Care Center in Longview,” Hedman recalled. “That place felt like a hospital. Columbia View feels like home.” Last week, however, the director of the Columbia View Care Center — Cathlamet’s only nursing home and one of the town’s largest employers — told resident...
A former Cathlamet resident found himself in the right place at the right time last week. Mark Clutter, who moved away in 1962 when he was 11 years old, brought his wife, Peggy, to visit last week. Looking for a place to stay, they poked their heads in the Hotel Cathlamet Sunday evening and booked a room. It turned out that the hotel had just opened--owners Stephanie and Kevin Prestegard and Wayne and Kay Cochran celebrated their grand opening last Friday, and the Clutters were the first customers. "We had other reservations, but they fell...
Meandering Skamokawa Creek is eroding the property of a two-time United States prisoner of war, and local officials are scrambling to find a way to lend a hand. José Castillo's black cap carries the words "US Army" and sports two pins, a sergeant's stripes and a marksman's emblem. He was a prisoner of war in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, he told county officials last week in introducing his predicament. His property borders Skamokawa Creek and Peterson Road in Middle Valley. The creek meanders just before going under the...
When Becky Erickson started at Clatsop Community College 18 years ago, her youngest son Alan was almost three. At that time, the mother of four boys was going to school for her own personal growth. “I’ve always loved teaching children and so I decided to pursue getting my Early Childhood Education certificate. In 2008, due to my years of experience, I was hired to teach at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School for the ECEAP (Early Childhood Educational and Assistanct Program) preschool, a state funded program for eligible families. At the sam...
Wahkiakum County commissioners addressed issues ranging from diking district work to Health and Human Services when they met Tuesday. Darren Haupt, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Conservation District manager, and Mike Linn, Diking District 5 commissioner, reported that the Department of Natural Resources has thrown a road block on their project that would repair drainage structure in the Skamokawa area. The DNR's aquatic habitat restoration specialist has written the district to request that the district re-evaluate the project design to consider other...
Here’s hoping for good weather next week, as we are expecting a houseful, including all of our children, grandchildren, great grandson, and others who consider themselves part of our family, about 40-45 in all. The property will probably look like a tent city, so hopefully no rain. I will not be contributing a Down River Dispatches column in next week’s Eagle, but will resume in the following week’s paper. Thank you for understanding, family first. This column will also be abbreviated as I am in preparation mode and I finally have a kitch...
The Eagle will host a candidates' forum July 23, 7 p.m. The venue has been up in the air. First, in the Pioneer Community Center, then not, and now, Thursday afternoon, we have a message from Town Hall saying that yes, indeed, we may hold the forum there. This forum will focus on local races--county commissioner and treasurer and Wahkiakum PUD commissioner. Candidates will have an opportunity to make a statement, and they'll answer written questions submitted by the public. Cathlamet attorney Tom Doumit will be moderator. Town officials...
To The Eagle: Reading the high school students' recent letters in The Eagle was very interesting. I found it even more interesting that not one mentioned the high school or the grade school not being accredited; in fact neither one has been for quite a few years. So I would like to congratulate St. James as being the only school in town that is accredited and has to meet standards and certain criteria. Charlene LaFontaine Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: My name is Bill Wiester of Moses Lake. I was raised in Skamokawa when I was a youngster. When I was 21, I was sent to Vietnam with the 82nd Airborne Division and served as an infantry platoon sergeant. In June of 1969, I received a letter from my mother, Jean Wiester. She attended Naselle High School in the 1940s and has sinced passed away. I read this letter, and a paragraph talked about my first cousin, Bob Wegdahl of Cathlamet. My mother wrote that Bob was going to take me salmon fishing on the Columbia near Puget Island. I...
To The Eagle: Students from a local high school have organized a SWAT team, Students Working Against Tobacco. Their goal is to discourage smoking amongst their peers. Were programs such as this replicated in high schools across the nation, the impact on our youth's health would be enormous. The SWAT team's approach is through use of films, medical literature and statistics showing the harm from the habit of smoking. By getting the message to those most vulnerable, it can be effective. According to the Centers for Disease Control, every day...

Last year I promised the vendors that had booths during the fair in the arena commercial area that I would try to bring in a big exhibit that would bring more people by their booths. My dream was to display our gillnet boat in this vendor area. The Wahkiakum County Fair's double-ended Columbia River Gillnet Boat has been moved to the fairgrounds arena commercial vendor area! This boat was built between 1913 and 1916 and has been in storage up on blocks sitting in its hull cradle for over 30 years. On Monday, the gillnet boat was carefully...
