    Destry Roper is running for two lives. Her mother’s and her own. Destry’s mom was Sandi Nelson, a fixture at Wahkiakum sporting events. Destry can still hear her mom yelling, “Go Mules!” even though Sandi has been gone for nearly three years. Sandi and her husband, John, lived on the Island raising beef cows and their two girls, Destry and Sheena. Sandi managed the fair for years, was involved in 4H and FFA. She loved to sew.     Oliver Charles Bacon, 95, of Puget Island passed away at Hospice Care Center in Longview on June 19, 2013. Oliver was born in Portland, OR on March 10, 1918 to Oliver and Esther (Hamilton) Bacon. He graduated from Bay City OR High School in 1935 and his family came to Cathlamet where he met and married Irene Olsen in 1939. They were married by his father who was an Assembly of God Pastor. Dianne grew up in Skamokawa attending school there before moving to Seattle. She worked for Industrial Bolt Supply for many years, living in the Seattle area for 50 years.     Wahkiakum County's rate of unemployment dipped from 11 percent in April to 10.6 percent in May, according to the latest figures from the state Employment Security Department. The figures said 160 of 1,470 people in the work force, 10.6 percent, were out of work in May. In April, 170 of 1,501in the work force, 12.3 percent, were out of work.     Nearly 2,500 same gender couples were married in Washington between December 6, 2012 and March 31, 2013, according to a June 6 report from the Washington Department of Health.     The potential of a shutdown of governmental services and employee layoffs because of the state legislature's failure to pass a budget for the biennium beginning July 1 is affecting county services as well.
