After months of planning I am delighted to confirm that the fair board has agreed to proceed with construction of the new arena. Wahkiakum County commissioners will hold a public hearing July 7, 11:30 a.m. on a request to close Steamboat Slough and Brooks Slough roads for tidegate and culvert work. The US Army Corps of Engineers is planning to install five new tide gates and refurbish a culvert on channels that drain the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian White-tail Deer. In response to requests from members of the local community, St. James Family Center has opened their kitchen for use as a community kitchen when it is not in use by the center. It may be rented by those wishing to develop culinary goods to sell at farmer's markets, caterers, chefs doing recipe testing, or anyone who has an interest in cooking or baking for public consumption. On June 16, the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board was treated to the musical styling of Wilho Saari playing his kantele, the national instrument of Finland. Saari, who started playing at age 50, is a fifth generation player. He has spent the last 16 years playing the instrument and annually shares his knowledge with fourth graders at the elementary school. Wahkiakum School Superintendent Bob Garrett last week opened and read the bids for building new football grandstands, which were damaged by arson last winter. The board received bids from three companies. The bids, ranging from $108,000 to $132,000, excluding taxes, will be reviewed by maintenance supervisor Bob McClintock. Family Center activities will keep kids busy St. James Family Center has planned summer activities for all ages. Field trips to the Kelso Spray Park and Triangle Bowl are in the works for the childcare and after school care programs, which raised the money for the trips. They have also planned weekly walks to the City Park on Fridays for activities such as flag football. The Columbia Estuary Environmental Education Program (CEEEP) at the Wahkiakum Community Foundation is sponsoring a group of young workers during the summer who will continue the monitoring work funded by a grant from NOAA and the Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership. All workers are CEEEP alums, some in college and some in high school.
