    The Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming Pool is the place to be, if you ask Duncan Cruickshank, the pool manager and public works superintendent for the Town of Cathlamet. There will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament this year, a new offering that is the brainchild of head lifeguard Shane Souvenir.   • Council approves water plant work

    Cathlamet's town council approved a call for bids for expansion of the water plant intakes and acted on other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. The goal of the water project is to locate an unused line under the Elochoman River which would increase the water plant capacity. The state Department of Health is threatening to restrict the number of new connections to the town and Puget Island water systems unless the town expands water intake capacity.     After snatching and eating almost 9,000 spring chinook salmon and steelhead through May 31, the number of pinnipeds lurking at Bonneville Dam has dropped to just one, a California sea lion. Steller sea lions were completely absent by the end of May. Sea lions at Bonneville this year ate more than twice what they’ve averaged over the past ten years.     Delvin L. Fredrickson, 77 of Grays River, died at his home on June 15, 2016. He was born in Turlock CA on July 20, 1938 to Earl and Lois (Clifton) Fredrickson. He graduated high school in 1957 and attended college at Delta Valley Community College. He spent two years in the Army. In 1967 he married Trudy Lynch. They lived in Stockton CA and raised their children there, where Del was an inspector for the Public Works Department. They moved to Grays River in 2000 after Del’s retirement. Mike was a logger in the Cathlamet area for 27 years before moving to Winnemucca, Nev., where he drove a haul pack truck. He eventually retired and moved back to Cathlamet.     The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Tuesday, June 28. The Julia Butler Hansen House is the oldest house in Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County and is owned by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation. The tours will be given by David Hansen, son of the late Julia Butler Hansen and will highlight the history of the house, Julia's family and the historic water colors depicting Cathlamet in the 1880's, 1890's and early 1900's that were painted by the late Maude Kimball Butler, Julia's mother.
