  • Sixth generation grocer buys Cathlamet store

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 22, 2023

When Michael Kirby transferred from a grocery store in Toledo to manage Cathlamet Market Fresh a couple years ago, he was told it would only be for six months. With the transfer came a promise that his half a year would be rewarded with management of an even bigger store. "We had to twist his arm," David Kirby, his father said. Little could he or his father know that it would become a much more permanent post. On April 11 of this year, not long after his father retired from the business,...

  • What are Republicans looking forward to?

    Jun 22, 2023

To The Eagle: FBI director James Comey reopened the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server days before the 2016 election. Possibly giving election (not popular vote) to Republicans. Now, the twice-impeached, twice-indicted Republican ‘front runner,’ is going up in the polls and bringing in $$$$. What does that say for the Republican party? Witch-hunt? Really? A grand jury shall find an indictment only when, from all the evidence, at least three-fourths of the jurors are convinced that there is probable cause, to belie...

  • Two quotes - food for thought

    Jun 22, 2023

To The Eagle: “If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." Lyndon B. Johnson. If you can convince the lowest MAGA Republican that they’re better then the best Democrat, they won’t care when you cut their Social Security, health care and lower the quality of their kids’ education, to pay for billionaire tax cuts. Hell, if you give a MAGA Republican somebody to hate, they’ll even vote for...

  • We heartily disagree

    Jun 22, 2023
    1

To The Eagle: After reading the indignant response of “No we didn’t” by the contributor who took exception to the use of the all inclusive ‘We’ in the letter titled “Looking in the mirror,” I was inspired to imagine an 18th century discussion between two fellow American colonials in 1787. “Nathan! Have you read the latest balderdash by that uppity snit, Jefferson?” “Nay, I avn’t. Wot’s he sai?” “He says ‘We The People’ are all created equal and have ‘rights’ given by God Almighty!” “Blimey! Wot bloody peepal? Hoose this damned ‘We’ as s’pos...

  • Town talks speed limits and sewer rates

    Ian Brandon|Jun 22, 2023

The Cathlamet town council met Tuesday and discussed speed limits and sewer rates again. The discussion about sewer rates began with connection fees for new developments. The city has not changed utility connection fees since 2013. The council discussed various methods of discount including the number of homes built or lower connection fees for less expensive housing but no decision was made. The port manager was the most recent water customer to ask for a larger reduction of their bill after a leak at the marina reached $2,800. The council...

WET BEGINNING--Our work week is starting off with a mix of clouds and rain and then some sun breaks and some heavy downpours in between; ugh! We woke up to the low 40s and barely got up to the mid-50s, so this is definitely not swimsuit weather just yet. As summer begins, the forecast is looking to be a bit drier, so we will see how that goes, as around here, the forecast can change in the blink of an eye! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 22-28 are Lance Britt, Danny Helms, Travis Gibson, Mary Baldwin, Don Speranza, Cliff...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 22, 2023

Lisa Nelson wrote this tribute to Francy Pentilla on Facebook: "In all my life, I never heard her speak an unkind word, never observed her fail to serve others, and I never observed her complain. She lived to be 96, so that is a lot of years of observing. She was the most kind, loving, and personable human being I ever met; a supreme role model and example for how to live. She wasn't wealthy, extreme, or extravagant. She was common folk to the core. If I can live up to half the things that she...

  • Zimmerman issues new challenge for 2023 WCF

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 22, 2023

Last year I issued a challenge for the Wahkiakum County Fair. I was pretty sure that I, an infrequent baker, could make the best pie in the county, and I happily told you so. I confess it was mostly bluster, but it was a bit of fun. Twenty-three other bakers in the county stepped up to prove me wrong, and boy did they ever. Four of them took top honors. I got a blue ribbon, but I think it was the fair’s way of saying, “Bless your heart.” The GFWC Cathlamet Woman’s Club has taken over the pie...
