Members of the Wahkiakum High School Class of 2009 earned over $400,000 in scholarships, which were presented at last Friday's graduation ceremony. Counselor Nancy Renner said she had challenged the class last fall to top the previous record, $208,000, and they put their minds to it and earned $406,750. Wahkiakum High School's Class of 2009 left a mark to be recognized. The class earned $406,000 in scholarship awards, a new record for a WHS class. Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie this week told the board of commissioners the governmental entities in the county will receive funding for the damage sustained during last winter's flood event. “We have been approved for a total of $32,393.41,” he said. Commissioners of Wahkiakum County Port District 1 met June 11 at their regularly scheduled meeting to act on a variety of matters. Port Manager Jackie Lea reported that revenue from rentals of the port’s vacation cabins has improved over last year. “We’re already at 49 percent collected,” Lea said, "compared to the same period in 2008." Public Works Director Pete Ringen presented the annual bridge inspection report to the county board of commissioners and described plans to improve low rated bridges. Ringen reviewed plans to address the four bridges with low sufficiency ratings. The August Hanson Bridge over the Elochoman River at Beaver Creek Road had a 73.02 sufficiency rating, the report said. Town of Cathlamet officials dealt with a number of issues relating to their wastewater treatment plant plans and a variety of other issues at the meeting Monday. Councilmembers agreed they need more information before they can decide on a course of action to replace the present sewage lagoon treatment plant. The proposal to have Cowlitz Family Health Center take over Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic is moving forward. County Commissioner Lisa Marsyla on Tuesday relayed a report from Health Center Executive Director Dian Cooper that an initial financial analysis of the clinic's patient base and potential revenue showed no problems.
