  • Smoky Water Follies June 25, 26, 27

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 17, 2010

SAW THE SUN--Last Saturday was certainly gorgeous and it got flat hot outside. My skin starting turning dark pink after a short time of being out in my flower beds. By the following morning though, it was so foggy and socked in, the ground was all wet and the trees were dripping, so at first, I thought it was raining. It sure was a far cry from the blue skies the morning before. The sun finally came out later in the afternoon but it was accompanied by a lot of wind. Monday brought us more overcast weather, while in Seattle they still had a...

  • State of bridges among items discussed by county commissioners

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

In their regular meeting Tuesday, Wahkiakum county commissioners moved to cancel a previously scheduled June 17 forum to discuss what was to be the Columbia Pacific National Heritage Area after ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia (SBEC) announced Friday it would no longer seek Congressional designation for the project. “They (SBEC) cited several reasons for withdrawing seeking a Congressional designation for a National Heritage Area,” said Commissioner Lisa Marsyla. “But they said the main problem was at the federal level.” Public Works Directo...

  • Seal Slough dike failing

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

Wahkiakum County Commissioners held a special work session Monday to discuss the ongoing controversy over the damage to Seal Slough and Kandoll Road caused by the Columbia Land Trust and Ducks Unlimited project in 2005. The commissioners asked all present for a review of last year's meeting on the subject. The commissioners heard from Columbia Land Trust (CLT) Stewardship Manager, Ian Sinks. Sinks told the board that the group had met last fall to discuss the Seal Slough erosion and flooding issue. “We were trying to resolve the erosion and h...

  • SBEC moves in different direction with NHA plans

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia (SBEC) announced Friday it will no longer seek congressional designation for the proposed Columbia Pacific National Heritage Area (NHA). SBEC said they were withdrawing the proposal to create a new NHA region due to the Obama administration’s official position to not support any new designations of NHA regions until national policy is established, coupled with budgetary constraints. “We believe it is not the right time to move forward with designation,” said SBEC executive Vice President Mike Dickerson in a written...

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 17, 2010

Wahkiakum PUD staff will soon announce the criteria for eligible customers to apply to participate in a study that will install heat pump water heaters in homes in order to monitor their energy efficiency. At the end of the 12 month program, participants have the option of keeping the new water heater. On Tuesday, PUD Auditor Erin Wilson explained to the PUD Board of Commissioners that Wahkiakum PUD was selected to participate in the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA)-sponsored program which will install 40 water heaters in homes across...

  • Noxious weed board takes on hemlock

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

For thousand of years, the juice of the hemlock plant has been used to kill people. The Greeks offered the plant’s poison as an option to kill their political prisoners. The most renowned prisoner to die from the plant was Socrates in Athens, Greece in 329 B.C. Condemned to die, Socrates drank the poisonous hemlock juice to commit suicide. Hemlock is also thought to have been given to Christ along with vinegar and myrrh when he was crucified. Native Americans used the toxic juice of the h...

  • Mass Casualty Exercise tests first responders

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

The Mass Casualty exercise last Thursday went off like clock work. Sponsored by Southwest Washington’s Region 6, Homeland Security Coordinating Council, the multi-county exercise included Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania and Wahkiakum counties. The exercise was designed to test the emergency response capabilities of each county. Public Information Officer Jerusha Kasch said as part of the exercise there was a shooting scenario. “The exercise was the example of a man who went looking for his wife in a m...

  • Class of 2010 looks to the future

    Jun 17, 2010

The Class of 2010 graduated Friday night. The 35 students dressed in graduation robes, black for the men, red for women, ended their high school careers with much happiness and with what sounded perhaps like a little uncertainty and uneasiness about the future. The 2010 Valedictorian Erin Turner told an audience of more than 300 parents, friends and family she had enjoyed her time in high school and she could imagine that in perhaps 20 years she could see herself sitting in the audience...

    Stevan Morgain|Jun 17, 2010

Lyons said the completion date for the permit to spray biosolids on...

  • What is happening to private property?

    Jun 17, 2010

To The Eagle: America was once a nation owned by the people. Now, nearly half our land is owned by government, international corporations and land trusts. Land is being concentrated back into the hands of the elite. Private property is what distinguishes us from all other nations. If government controls the land, they control our lives and America will be no different than the feudal systems our Founding Fathers fled in Europe. It is for this reason private property rights were central to the Constitutional principles of our nation. Private...

  • Wahkiakum: A welfare case?

    Jun 17, 2010

To The Eagle: Many who spoke against the proposed National Heritage Area recently evoked the county’s pioneer origins and tradition of self-sufficiency. Indeed, our area developed largely without outside help for much of its history (notwithstanding SR4 and the Puget Island Bridge, two seminal infrastructure projects built with federal money). Yet the image of Wahkiakum as a can-do frontier outpost is decades out of date. Consider two income profiles: back in 1969, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data, earned income made up 79 p...

  • Rods and Reels success down to great community

    Jun 17, 2010

To The Eagle: What great communities! The Derby Dollars For Scholars and the Rods & Reels Rod Run cannot give enough thanks to all that make the Sturgeon Derby and Car Show such a success. Naming each Sponsor would fill this page, let alone, the volunteers, participants and spectators that give so much. So in keeping this short, thanks to all that supported the Derby Dollars for Scholars and the Rods & Reels Rod Run. The community's support for this event is overwhelming. Whether you are a fisherman or a car enthusiast, you can be proud that...

  • Congress must exercise authority

    Jun 17, 2010

To The Eagle: The Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board recently begged Congress to keep politics out of regulating our nation's money supply. Well, friends, that sort of advice is exactly what we don't need. Congress is contemplating some further regulation of the Federal Reserve and Wall Street. These efforts are misguided because Congress does not recognize the real cause of the financial disaster that has overtaken us. Our $14 trillion national debt and associated annual interest charges of $400 billion are a direct result of Congress...

  • Commissioners right to turn down NHA

    Jun 17, 2010

To The Eagle: My goodness! We finally have at least two county commissioners who realize they were elected by their constituents and not by those waiting in the wings to capitalize on the way the commissioner votes on issues. Thank you, Blair Brady and Dan Cothren for standing up with the majority of voters in your districts and not bowing to those who see dollar signs. A National Heritage Area sounds lovely, but why not give historically significant properties loans or grants without designating three entire counties as a NHA. Let individuals...

  • FAFF concert brings back sock hops

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 17, 2010

School’s out, but where is summer? Only a few teaser days so far, so that must mean it will be a warm late summer, right? After our whirlwind weekend last weekend it was great to come home and just sit for a while. We attended a high school graduation in Redmond. Oregon on Friday night for our grandson and got up the next morning for the four hour drive to Ellensburg for the college graduation at 1:30 p.m. Lots of driving and lots of celebrating (not to mention, while in Oregon, we celebrated three birthdays as well). Time certainly does f...
