  • WHS seniors make graduation walk

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 16, 2016

It's not every day that a high school principal gets dunked on, and it's certainly not every graduation, but much to Wahkiakum High School Principal Stephanie Leitz surprise, it happened to her on Friday in front of a big crowd. She can thank the Class Choice speaker Ryan Quigley for that. And Joey Moore who provided a little support by holding up the small rim and backboard behind her. Valedictorian Kennedi LaBerge welcomed the friends and families that were there to celebrate the Class of...

  • Port dealing with launch ramp issues

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 16, 2016

Commissioners of Port District No. 1 discussed the marina boat launch, dredging and streetlights last Thursday at their June meeting. Some boaters continue to power on at the marina boat launch, despite several posted signs stating that it is not allowed. Driving boats on to partially submerged trailers is called powering on or power loading. The proper procedure is to float the boat onto the trailer. In order to power on, boaters must speed up the motor, causing the propellers to spin more...

  • Corrections/Clarifications

    Rick Nelson|Jun 16, 2016

Arrgh! There's nothing like publishing to show your mistakes to the world. We made a whopper last week. While preparing the page honoring the Wahkiakum High School Class of 2016, I typed "2015." I finished the page, read it over "carefully," and printed a copy. Two colleagues proofed the page. This is normal; all copy is reviewed three times before going into print. We made some minor adjustments but we all missed The Big One. So. We all apologize to the WHS Class of 2016 and their friends and families. We've printed the page correctly this...

  • Love of the life drives golf coach

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 16, 2016

Nick Vavoudis is all about the details, and it might be from all the years he worked in high technology sales. These days, the details are all about the kids on the Wahkiakum High School golf teams, the kids he has worked with as a volunteer coach and now in his new role. He just finished his first season as head coach. Vavoudis and his wife, Martie-Lynn, moved to the northwest, finally settling in Cathlamet in 2008. "The reason we came here?" he asked. "The weather and the price of housing. But...

  • Father's Day is this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 16, 2016

BIG DIFFERENCE--Last Saturday was certainly a big change from the previous one, as instead of trying to keep out of the blazing sun and shading ourselves with our umbrellas, like we had to do at the car show, we were raising those umbrellas to keep from getting soaked from some very heavy downpours! Of course, we did have some breaks, which were nice, but all in all, it was a pretty soggy day here in West Valley. However, just down the road, or in Cathlamet, the sun was shining and it was pretty doggone nice so it really depended on where you...
