The visitors controlled the ball most of the second half but managed only two field goals. Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 15, 2011

HOT ONE--Several days last week were quite toasty, as was half the weekend, so while school started, hunting season began and we are thinking Fall, it felt like Summer had finally shown up and about cooked us all! I'm glad it was cooling off as it was a bit much for some of us, and the poor kids who had to practice and play football in this heat, were certainly not enjoying it. Of course, when it starts raining and blowing, it won't be much fun either. As this work week begins the clouds have moved in and it's about 25 degrees cooler. We may...

On September 21, 2011 shortly after 10:15 a.m. the coastal All Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) sirens will be tested sounding both the standard test message and the actual warning tone. The AHAB sirens in Pacific County and the other outer Washington coastal counties are being activated to conduct a true “end-to-end” test of the entire tsunami warning system. This test will help familiarize residents with the sound made by the AHAB sirens during an actual tsunami warning. It will differ from the routine monthly testing that occurs on the fir...

  • Northwest Dance Project

    Ruby Murray|Sep 15, 2011

With a drape of long lichen over her head and the shoulder of a green lace dress, Lithuanian born Vilte Bacinskaite improvised a contemporary ballet along the bank of the Elochoman River on a humid day last week. Bacinskaite was one of five dancers from Portland-based Northwest Dance Project who traveled to Carole and Dick Lewis’ home on the Elochoman River to shoot sequences that may be used as props in future dance productions. Crawling across a wall covered with moss and slugs required more theatrics than dancing. I was trying to tap into th...

  • Council restores fiscal management of fire department

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 15, 2011

In a special meeting on Monday, The Cathlamet Town Council adopted a resolution establishing that all normal fiscal management functions of the Cathlamet Fire Department shall be performed by town staff. Last week, Mayor George Wehrfritz had ordered town staff to cease handling department accounts. In a letter to council members, he said that he had been advised by the town's risk management advisor that under the existing ordinance governing the fire department, the council, not the mayor, has authority to direct or handle fire department...

  • Commissioners hear plan for emergency manager

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 15, 2011

Wahkiakum County may soon restore the position of emergency management coordinator. The position would be responsible for developing emergency response plans for the county and for coordinating the county's response in emergencies. The position was cut from the sheriff's department budget several years ago as county commissioners reduced staffing to cope with anticipated revenue shortfalls. On Tuesday, however, Sheriff Jon Dearmore and Undersheriff Mark Howie outlined a plan to restore the position by combining funds from two continuing grant...

  • Auditors release Cathlamet report with 2 findings

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 15, 2011

The Washington State Auditor's Office on Monday released the long awaited report on the Town of Cathlamet for the years 2008-09. Overall, the auditors said the town's financial statements presented accurate positions and complied with state laws. However, auditors identified two conditions which they called "significant enough to report as findings." These are: 1. The town, council and management do not sufficiently monitor the fire department, placing public resources at risk, and 2. The town, council and management do not sufficiently...

As Fair Manager I have the honor of giving out a Manager's Award. This year I gave the award to two volunteer superintendents who spent many weeks building, cleaning, painting, decorating and preparing paperwork before our Fair started. These two volunteers worked many long days and through it all smiled and enjoyed every minute! They made their Rabbit, Cavy and Poultry building a special place for exhibitors to bring and show their animals. The 2011 Manager's Award was given to Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal. Congratulations and thank you for...

  • We have the audit, let's have the fire department

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 15, 2011

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Many people would like to apply that old saying to the Cathlamet Fire Department and Mayor George Wehrfritz's efforts to bring its management under his control. The department operates under an arrangement created in 1932. It put supervision of the department under the Cathlamet Commercial Club, which now operates as the Chamber of Commerce, with that supervision subject to approval by the town council. Over the years, the department grew to be a strong organization that operated largely on its own, with its...
