Joan E. Kindig, 70, of Skamokawa, died peacefully and at ease on June 6, 2013, surrounded by her partner, Vicki Allenback, her family and lifelong friends. Born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, Joan studied anthropology and had a natural healing ability which she practiced all her life. She was kind and generous, with a dry wit that sparkled out of a quiet presence and a look that left you no doubt about what she thought. Lifelong Puget Island resident James M. Bjorge, passed away on June 10, 2013 at St. John Medical Center. Jim was born to Glenn and Ora Loraine (Coates) Bjorge on August 5, 1959 in Longview. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1977. After farming for his whole life, Jim joined his brother Ken in the construction business in 1986. On June 1, 1987 Jim married Joannie Olsen. Caroline Iris Hedlund, 89, passed away in Placerville, California on June 8, 2013. Iris was born on March 16, 1924 in Liverpool, England to George and Catherine (Hines) Moore. She completed her education in England before marrying Roy Hedlund, whom she met during WWII. They were married in Liverpool in 1944. At the end of the war, Iris traveled from England to the Cathlamet area to live with her husband Roy. Iris enjoyed her life in Cathlamet with her many very close friends and family. The Rock 'N' Roll Congress is asking all students to submit their artwork for the Wahkiakum Youth Art Exhibit. This will take place at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa starting June 15 and will run through July 14. A reception will be held opening night from 6 to 8 p.m., with live entertainment by Kyleen Austin. Refreshments will be served. There are boxes available at the schools for submissions or they can also be turned in at Redmen Hall until noon on Saturday. The original Move Over Law was passed in 2007 in an effort to protect emergency workers who were stopped on the highways conducting their business. Since 2007, the number of collisions involving emergency vehicles and workers has increased. Tsuga Gallery will hold a special exhibit and sale of original art from the estate of Janet Cimino Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., at 70 Main Street, Cathlamet. The Washington State Auditor’s Office released its report for the Skamokawa Water and Sewer District on June 10. The report, which had no findings, contained the results of an audit which examined the district’s financial records for the period from January 2010 through December 2011. The St. James Family Center Childcare Program has scheduled a field trip to the Triangle Bowl in Longview. Children must be enrolled in the childcare program to take advantage of this trip. Library customers can now return books and movies any time of day or night rather than waiting until the library is open. Thanks to local residents Michelle and John Wisner, Cathlamet Library has a like-new book return. The Wisners completely overhauled the old red box by repainting it, removing rust and dents, repairing the interior mechanisms and making a new cushion. The American Red Cross has scheduled a blood donation event for Wednesday, June 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Hotel Cathlamet, 69 Main Street. During summer, blood donations typically drop off dramatically as donors go on vacation and schools close, but the need for blood never takes a holiday. It looks like we will get a few raindrops in the next couple of days, but it certainly has been nice weather for the past week. After breaking a belt on my lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, and only completing half of the yard at that time, it looked like I would need to bring in the hay equipment to cut the rest of it. Care Careers Academy/Elder Options is offering a new Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training to persons wanting to pursue a healthcare career. Daytime classes start July 10, and evening classes start July 15. CNA training allows graduates to work in nursing homes, in-home senior/disabled care, doctor’s offices, hospitals and retirement homes. CNA training is a pre-requisite for many nursing schools.
