With the toss of a tassel, the Naselle Grays River Valley High School Class of 2015 put a cap on 13 years of education last Saturday. The ceremony began the usual way, with Pomp and Circumstance and a formal procession. Twenty seniors in blue robes took their seats in front of a supportive crowd. Emily Gjovik welcomed everyone and, Valedictorian Chloe Zimmerman stepped up to the podium. "Today is a day of gratitude for me," Zimmerman said. She encouraged her classmates to appreciate their...

  • Commissioners okay transfer of parcel to diking district

    Rick Nelson|Jun 11, 2015

It's a small piece of property outside the dike on North Welcome Slough Road and dotted with gaps where the river has eroded the bank. It went through foreclosure, and when Wahkiakum County Treasurer Tammy Peterson tried to auction it last winter, there were no bidders. That's when the interest started. A private citizen offered to buy the property for the amount owing the county in back taxes and costs. The matter came before the board of commissioners last week, and Chair Mike Backman said he wanted to postpone action until he had consulted...

  • Who benefits from a new property tax?

    Jun 11, 2015

To The Eagle: A new tax on home and property owners has been proposed by an individual who has no property or home in his name in Wahkiakum County and agreed to by an individual with little tax liability in the county. Could there possibly be a conflict with a family member who would benefit financially from the revenue generated by this tax? I would hope that is not the case. Many of us in the county would go for a minimal tax if the sole beneficiary is the fair and fair grounds, not every wanting group or individual in the county. The fair...

TOASTY--We were back to sunny weather last weekend and several days before and after that, so I hope you had plenty of sunscreen handy! If you happened to stay at Skamokawa Vista Park this weekend, the windy conditions made for perfect kite flying opportunities. The newly installed power and water spaces along the riverfront area were being taken advantage of as well, so they were definitely a great addition to the park. We're still going to have some dry conditions so be sure to call and see if there is a high fire danger warning in our area...
