There was no relief from the hot weather in the Naselle gym on Saturday at the graduation for the Class of 2016. Programs became fans, flapping in the faces of people all over the room. Class Valedictorian Taylor Eaton welcomed the crowd to the ceremony before Faculty Speaker Rob Dalton stepped up to the podium. Dalton told stories on the graduates. "They voted for me to speak," he said with a laugh, "consider it self inflicted." He told a story on a fifth grade Makayla Matthews. "When I was a f...
Kennedi LaBerge is the Valedictorian for Wahkiakum High School's Class of 2016. She will graduate with a 3.99 GPA. Her work ethic runs in the family. Her sister, Madison, was Salutatorian for the Class of 2014. LaBerge admits there is some external pressure to do well, but said that most of it comes from within. "It still bugs me that my GPA is a 3.99," LaBerge said. "I had a 4.0 until the first semester of this year when I got an A- in an online class, Honors American Lit." But she quickly...
Hannah Arn is the Salutatorian for Wahkiakum High School's Class of 2016. She will graduate with a 3.98 GPA. The competition must have been tough. Arn will go on an 18 month mission for her church before attending college. The mission will begin sometime between July and September. Don't ask her where she's going just yet, because she doesn't know. It could be anywhere in the world. "I'm so excited," Arn exclaimed. "I can't wait to hear where I'm going to go." When the 18 months is up, Arn will...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday to discuss regular business. Richard Swart from the Town of Cathlamet was in attendance. He informed the commissioners that he had been talking to the town’s Public Works Superintendent Duncan Cruickshank and the PUD’s own General Manager, Dave Tramblie about a surplus of light fixtures that the town currently had in storage. The town was planning to use several around the site of the former sewer lagoons and few along the woo...
From the Desk of The PTO: I’d like to thank each and every individual that made the 2015-2016 school year a great success! We worked hard and accomplished a lot, and that was only with the help of the volunteers, parents, grandparents and community. Thank you! This year we put a lot of our efforts into the School Library and were able to purchase approximately $4000 worth of brand new books for the great kids at JA Wendt and we also were able to buy new books for the classroom libraries. This is awesome! The teachers and kids in their c...

To The Eagle: My husband and I prepare every year for our annual visit to our local cemetery. To prepare we load fresh cut ferns, cut flowers, along with a scrub brush, hand grass clippers, rags, cleaning solution, two gallons of water and a large screwdriver to remove the upside down vase that is in front of the headstone (usually it is stuck because moles have pushed dirt inside the vase.) When we get the vase out we have to clean inside as the dirt is packed in it. We brush dirt off the stones, wash using the scrub brush, rinse the...
Three hundred vehicles rolled into the Skamokawa fairgrounds early Saturday morning. Participants sought shade under tents and trees as the hours moved to mid-day and the temperature rose near the 90 degree mark. "I joke that I do a sun dance every year to keep the rain away," Lee Tischer, the event organizer said on Monday. "I may have gone a little overboard this year." Hundreds of people wandered the cars, stopped for strawberry shortcake, checked out the raffle items, watched kids fish, and...
Wahkiakum Middle and High School music students presented their spring concert last week. Top right, WHS flutists Tanner Grove, Micca Cothren and Keysha Smith lead the high school band in a little Rock Lobster. Bottom right, the Wahkiakum High School choir were short a couple singers due to illness, but Kyrah Scuito, Justin Hoven, and Ayesha Ahmed made a sweet sound anyway. Bottom left, the 6th grade choir learned some rock n' roll tunes for the Spring Concert. Photos by Diana...
Duncan Cruickshank, the Town of Cathlamet’s Public Works Superintendent, likened this year’s opening of the Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming Pool to the last minute production of a Broadway show. “Will it work? Will everyone show up?” he wondered. The propane heater is scheduled for maintenance this week and the main pump has yet to be tested, according to Cruickshank. On the bright side, a new liner has been inserted and a local electrician is almost done installing underwater lights....
Wahkiakum County Commissioners handled a variety of business when they met Tuesday, including: --Commissioner Dan Cothren reported he had met with officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers and the upriver ports association to talk about dredging issues. “Things are moving,” Cothren said, adding that the representative of the upriver ports seemed agreeable to the county’s concept that dredged sand will be placed along eroding beaches before it goes to inland disposal. Commissioner Mike Backman suggested the board hold a public meeting to ex...
PLENTY WARM!--All those heat lovers must have been totally pumped about the heat wave we had last weekend, and even the days prior to and after that, as it was plenty hot, that's for sure! Anytime temps are in the upper 90s at the beginning of June for several days in Skamokawa, with no wind and temperatures still around 70 in the latter part of the evening, well, that's really rare; and uncomfortable! I hear we are supposed to cool down by the time you read this and we should even see some rain, so I know my lawn is going to enjoy that, and...

Their staff, aged two to 15, live in their home. Not that the two year old is doing much, except keeping mom busy. "Yesterday was fun, yesterday is what it was all about," Ken Ruch said of Sunday afternoon in the restaurant. "The family working together is fun. What adds to it is when I hear people out here talking and community happeni...

Wahkiakum County officials on Tuesday agreed to put off a decision on how to restructure the county’s information technology (IT) management until late July. The county auditor’s office has handled IT management since courthouse offices started using computers, but the job has grown so technical and time consuming that even with assistance from a technical consulting company, More Power computing, joining the effort, the office wants to lose the responsibility. At a discussion two weeks ago, commissioners asked the IT committee to evaluate pos...

The event, which is scheduled for August 29-30, teams veterans and the widows and children of veterans with local volunteers who will take them out on their boats to do a little fishing on the Columbia River. "We're bringing down 55 people," Roche said. "The number of widows in that group is unknown at this time. Housing has already been arranged for the...
