FANTASTIC--While we were all stressing out about the rain and the wind that had been going on most of last week, come Saturday, the Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run met with clear skies, sunshine and just fantastic weather all day long and of course, brought with it a wonderful turn out of cars once again. For the past six years we have had to stress out about the weather, as everyone knows that miserable weather means disaster when it comes to car shows, but the lucky streak has continued! The only thing you could say negative...

Over the past three years, Rose Rendler has been a one-woman bookmobile to residents at Cathlamet’s Columbia View Care Center. Rendler greets residents and gets an update on health concerns. She knows who’s still able to read and who prefers Danielle Steele. She shakes hands with residents who may not be able to articulate a sentence but who have a big smile. She’s learned about residents’ taste in books and has found that few want blood and gore. She brings Westerns, romance and mystery. Some like to read about pioneer women, she said. R...
PUD commissioners Bob Jungers, Dennis Reid and Gene Healy learned Tuesday that they must soon make funding decisions for the new substation on Jacobsen Road. The district has about $2 million in reserve, General Manager Tramblie said, and the board will need to borrow to complete the $2.9 million project. “It’s bad timing,” said Tramblie. Bonneville Power Administration will raise rates this October and the PUD’s engineering firm expects to award bids in early October for the remaining $2.8 million the project will cost. “The substatio...
Although Sarah Phillips, Wahkiakum High School valedictorian, and salutatorian Brandon Fudge share a deep affection for their classmates, their history with the school is different. Phillips came to Cathlamet and entered the school district as a freshman, while Fudge has been here from the beginning. Each has good things to say about being in a small school in a small community. “You have to work at it. But you can have 150 close friends,” Phillips said. “I can’t imagine a better place to raise kids,” Fudge said. The two agreed that it was im...
Naselle High School valedictorian Taylor Wasmundt and salutatorian Haleigh See are passionate about their prospective careers in health care, their love of sports-- volleyball, basketball, track and softball--and the 22 people in their graduating class, 12 of whom have been together since preschool. “We are really close,” they both say. “We’re not divided into academic nerds, sports and drama groups,” See said. “We all have to work together.” Both students have had a strong desire to excel academically, and both balance that with a desire to b...
Wahkiakum County commissioners approved some requests from department heads on Tuesday and delayed action on others. Commissioners approved purchase of a new computer program for emergency services dispatching, and they recommended the health department conduct an educational program before implementing tough deadlines of event food permit applications. Joannie Bjorge, chief civil deputy of the county sheriff's department, asked the board to approve a $20,301 computer program purchase. The program will allow dispatchers to go through a set of...
Despite some concern, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday named the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce the county's associate development organization (ADO). The board signed a contract with the state Department of Commerce that will make the Chamber eligible for a variety of state economic development programs to be conducted in the area. The Chamber succeeds the defunct Lower Columbia Economic Development Council. Because of loss of funding, the LCEDC and the Wahkiakum Community Foundation this past winter folded themselves into the...
To The Eagle: We want to recognize three students at Wahkiakum High School for the time and effort they have invested in working to provide foodstuffs and personal care items to the Helping Hand Food Bank. They are also planting a portion of the community garden to grow and donate to the food bank. We also want to thank the people who donated to the young people and who bring ite...
To The Eagle: In the 20 plus years I have spent studying our money system, I have become aware of reforms that need to be implemented to improve conditions for people living here and also those living in other countries. I am presenting a list of them in this forum, but it will be a serial list. First, "The New World Order" is not just a slogan or phrase that is bandied about. High (and low) profile financiers around the world have been planning and making arrangements here and abroad to consolidate their control over governments. Here we will...

Rainy weather and grass growing what seemed like inches each day was the challenge put before the fairgrounds volunteers last week. We had spent many weeks painting and cleaning inside the buildings, creating new flower beds and cutting up cords of fire wood in the rain. There were acres of grass to mow one more time before the Dollars for Scholars event. We needed the ground to dry so we could finish this task and turn the fairgrounds into a beautiful place for the event. Finally the sun was back in our skies and it was very hot on Friday. We...
