Editor’s Note: In mid-May, Rick Nelson and his family received a letter from Washington State Governor Jay Inslee. Here is what he had to say: Dear Rick, Mary Ann, Jacob, and Jamie: Trudi and I were deeply saddened to hear that Rick recently entered hospice care. Please know that we are keeping your entire family in our prayers during this difficult time. Words are inadequate to express the depth of our appreciation for Rick’s contributions to the Wahkiakum County community, but I wanted to take a moment to recognize his decades of exe...

When he met Mary Wegdahl, who grew up on Puget Island, he found a life partner and a lead...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners began their meeting with a moment of silence for Wahkiakum County Eagle Publisher and Editor Rick Nelson. To The Eagle: The “gay boy” we laughed at and punched when we were in high school; he committed suicide. The girl we called a slut because she wouldn’t go out with us; she was a virgin. The skinny boy we called lame, because he fixed his glasses with tape; he worked two jobs to support his family. The girl in math class we pushed because she wouldn’t get out of our way; she was also physical abused by her parents. The girl we called fat; she’s starving herself trying to lose weight. And the old man at the newspaper stand we called a freak bec...

NICE, DRY WEATHER--For those folks wishing for some warmer temperatures to go along with some nice dry days, it looks like you got your wish, as it’s been pretty dang decent here lately. I think the wind kept us from being overly hot, so that was a good thing. Then again, it does help dry things out faster so we need to be mindful when it comes to doing any burning of any kind. I want to start by honoring Rick Nelson, a steadfast man of courage and commitment who passed away on Friday, June 2. To spend 22 years fighting cancer was an enormous challenge for both Rick and his wife, with so many years of trips to OHSU, meetings with doctors, nights away from home, staying in the hospital, enduring chemotherapy of all types and its aftermath. I admire him in death as in life and his continally used word, "Onward," will stay with me forever. "Onward, Rick," and may all the...
