    Jun 6, 2013

Many teens are making plans for senior week and graduation. While these are fun and safe events for most, there is a heightened risk for underage drinking. Parents and other adults can help keep teens safe by being informed and prepared. Most students in Washington make healthy choices, but some are pressured to make alcohol part of their celebrations. Some teens may think of graduation night as a rite-of-passage event that should be celebrated with alcohol. It's also important to make a plan with teens for what he or she will do in a risky...

  • Naselle schools set graduation programs

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 6, 2013

It is looking a lot more like summer, with the warmer days and more sunshine. I see more lawns being mowed and many farmers cutting the hay fields. Dirk Heitsch has brought his herd of cows back to our pasture and it is a joy to watch the babies romp and play in the tall grass. Dirk spoils “his girls” every day when he comes by. Each one needs to have some individual attention from him and they follow him around like puppy dogs. Maybe that’s why his beef tastes so good. News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle-Grays River Valley Class...

Here's her story: Ridden By Jan Caliman I responded to an email from Woman Tours that said an angel wanted to pay for a mother/daughter team to ride the Outer Banks of North Carolina to celebrate Mother’s day. The instructions were to write an essay in 200 words or less (you’ve got to be kidding, I thought) why the angel should choose you. This is what I submitted: I had never been on a bike in my life until a few years ago. I had suffere...

  • Good neighbors spot, stop potential fire

    Jun 6, 2013

To The Eagle: This evening around 5 p.m. Jim Jespersen stopped by. He said he'd been driving past and stopped to extinguish smoking bark on our neighbor's flower bed adjacent to North Welcome Slough Road. The owner was away, so Jim wanted to let us know what had happened. I walked over with him to inspect the place he'd watered and we found three new smoking fumaroles in the bark. About two feet away from one fumarole was a cigarette butt. I phoned the property owner, and during our conversation a second Puget Island resident stopped his truck...

  • Food bank president makes clarifications

    Jun 6, 2013

To The Eagle: I am writing to correct the letter written by Patricia Rafferty regarding the post office food drive. We were told that Helping Hands declined to participate in the collection. With the help of postal staff, three volunteers from Wahkiakum Food Bank and two gentlemen from the VFW, we were able to man four drop off sites. Even though we were not obligated to do so, we delivered part of the collection to Helping Hands. The baseball game collection was split exactly in half. Our shelves are currently full because we constantly work...
