Two Wahkiakum Mule golfers made the final cut, and the Mules placed fourth overall in the state 2B golf tournament this week. Here's the report from Coach Nick Vavoudis: After day one at state, district runner up Austin Good waited an hour and a half to see if he made the cut. Early, his 89 looked safely placed among the top 20 day two qualifiers. Every 15 minutes the cut number 92 began to lower. An hour later it looked like 91 was gonna make it but even team mate Elliot Haney, who shot 88 began to worry. The final group finally posted and...

Commissioners made quick work of the slender agenda at Tuesday’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported on recent projects and purchases and revisited the problematic Western Wahkiakum Water System. “I was asked to keep the Western Wahkiakum Water System situation out on the table,” he said. “We talked about borrowing more money. If we borrowed $50,000 to do a half mile of pipe, you are going to spend $10,000 a year to pay that off and you’l...
Aleksandra Vlahovic has been in Cathlamet a little more than a month but has handled the transition with aplomb and a great sense of fun. She is an only child, the daughter of an inspector and a hospital administrator in a small town called Bar, in Montenegro, in part of what used to be Yugoslavia. “People hear Montenegro and think I am from South Africa,” Vlahovic said. “Or they would ask if I were from Spain. Even teachers would open with ‘Hola! Como estas?’ It created some really fun moments....
Wahkiakum County Board of commissioners handled a variety of business when they met Tuesday. The board approved amendments to a lease agreement with Hancock Forest Management that will allow NOAA Weather to install data gathering equipment on the KM Mountain radio repeater site. The agency wants to install, at a minimum, a barometer and rain gauge, said Emergency Management Coordinator Beau Renfro. The data will be available to the public, and forecasters will be better able to predict flood and other threats in the area, he said. There is no...
The board of directors of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday asked the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners to appoint a new liaison. Commissioner Mike Backman has been the county commission's representative on the Chamber board since he took office 17 months ago, but Chamber members said Tuesday he's working against them. Backman has wanted to separate economic development activity from the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber was once separate from the now-defunct Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (LCEDC), but the Chamber...
The fairgrounds in Skamokawa were filled with people and cars as attendance hit an all time high at the ninth annual Rods n Reels event last Saturday. With 333 cars registered, and a few more showing up throughout the day, there was a lot to see. People signed up for raffles and kids were able to take part in the event by catching a fish in a trout pond. “It’s crazy,” Lee Tischer, the event organizer, said. “We had at least 100 more cars registered than last year. It’s a record for us. “We t...
