Hmmm. Can’t remember when you transplanted those tomatoes outside or how early you planted those yummy peas? If only you had kept a garden journal you would have all that information at hand. Several garden journals are available in bookstores. In them you write the important gardening details you want to remember. You can buy a journal or record information on a handy wall calendar to refer to each year. My journal is for three years. How interesting it is to compare the results of the different techniques I used from year to year. One year I...
Project updates and long service recognition were the main focus of Tuesday’s PUD meeting. Gray & Osborne Engineer Mike Johnson gave the board an ecology report and an update on the SR 409 project. In regard to the 409 project, a biological assessment has been submitted for review. Part of the package included an archeological assessment. He said gaining the necessary permits from the Army Corps of Engineers should be a relatively short process, about one to three months. He said there is still the slim possibility to be constructing this s...

Wahkiakum County residents have asked their county commissioners for more controls on dogs following an attack May 26 that killed 97 chickens at a Puget Island farm. The two black labs got into a pen for pullets at the residence of Scott and Dolly Hartzell. Hartzell shot and killed the dogs. The dogs had been seen wandering the Island earlier in the day. The Hartzells said the loss of the birds is a significant loss for their egg production business. Undersheriff Jon Dearmore said Tuesday the owner of the dogs still hadn't been identified. At...
Wahkiakum County commissioners are appealing to US Army Corps of Engineers officials to reverse a policy that will change development in diked areas. Last fall, Corps officials notified Diking District No. 1 of Puget Island that the Corps will no longer allow buried utility crossings in the Island dikes. The Corps has taken the position that the crossings are potential routes for high water to pierce the dikes and lead to flooding. The mains for the Puget Island Water System run inside the dikes, and to get water to structures outside the...
Opponents of a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal near Puget Island on Tuesday urged Wahkiakum County officials to seek support from state agencies in making agreements with plant proponents. Brett VandenHeuvel, attorney for Columbia Riverkeeper, a group opposed to the proposed Bradwood Landing LNG plant, told county Commissioners George Trott, Dan Cothren and Blair Brady that support from state agencies would allow them to negotiate with Bradwood Landing or impose conditions on operations and safety practices for the plant. VandenHe...

The Bonneville Power Administration is investigating and offering a reward for information in connection with an incident that occurred near Cathlamet. Last week, BPA officials discovered an airway marker light damaged by firearms on a 115-kilovolt power line structure near Cathlamet on Puget Island. Such lights help steer aircraft away from power lines. BPA estimates that $4,000 worth of damage was done to the equipment. "Damage that takes out airway marker lights creates an extremely dangerous situation,” said Kim Howell, BPA district m...
