SOGGY--Well, most of this past Memorial weekend was pretty damp I'm afraid. There were a few hours on a couple of days where it was not raining and not too terribly cold, but if you were out camping, you would probably not think this was the most terrific weather for doing so. I know walking around through wet grass or mud puddles is not that much fun, and neither is loading up those wet tents and things when the weekend is over, so hopefully you stayed late enough that you got to dry things out when that sunshine finally showed up about 3 p.m....

The Long Beach police and civilians who helped save Washington State Patrol trooper Scott Johnson after he was shot in the line of duty were honored at a ceremony last Wednesday. In February, Trooper Johnson, a Naselle resident, was on duty at the scene of a suspected DUI call in Long Beach when a man walked up and shot him in the back of the head, police said. Johnson survived and attended the event honoring those who helped save his life and apprehended the suspected shooter. Led by State...
Wahkiakum PUD commissioners and management discussed proposed water rate increases at their meeting June 1. Manager Dave Tramblie asked the board to come to a consensus about the proposed rate increases so that rate hearings could be scheduled for public comment. The proposed rate increase for the Puget Island water system is $3.25 beginning in August of this year. The commissioners declined to support a further rate increase for January, but said they would revisit rates at that time if needed. The increased charge will be applied to the...
What’s got into those Redman Hall volunteers? They’ve been re-energized. The downstairs portion of the Hall has been reorganized to give the merchandise a pleasant and inviting look. “Heck! Even I’m buying something today,” said volunteer Bernadette Goodroe as she placed her check in Redman Hall’s cash box. Goodroe had just purchased one of the Hall’s new “Smoke on The Water” tees. The shirt, designed by area artist Don Nisbett, depicts a sophisticated salmon smoking a cigar swimming up strea...

Local Issues: Wahkiakum County Commissioner Blair Brady attended the May 25 Grays River Grange meeting. Commissioner Brady wished to let members know of his intentions to vote no on the proposal to create a Columbia Pacific National Heritage Area (NHA) in Wahkiakum County. Even though Commissioner Brady states he can find no downside to the proposal, he says he’s voting the will of his constituents. There seems to be some concern regarding how many constituents were actually contacted. For example, I am someone whose view on the matter was not...

Those who have driven west on State Route 4 through Skamokawa and wondered about the history of Redmen Hall now have a chance to both learn about the building and pass that information onto others. The opportunity will be given on June 26 when the Friends of Skamokawa docent training will educate volunteers about Skamokawa and Wahkiakum County and will feature local Governor's Heritage Award winner and historian Irene Martin. The Friends of Skamokawa, founded 24 years ago, purchased the building which then underwent an extensive restoration...
Wahkiakum County officials are working on a plan to continue funding security officers for the county district and superior courts. District Court Judge Bill Faubion and Superior Court Judge Michael Sullivan have hired two retired police officers as security officers under a state grant which expires at the end of June. The grant has been discontinued in the state government budget cuts, and this week, the judges asked that the commissioners authorize them to spend $6,000 from their Trial Court Improvement Fund to fund court security for the...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a proposal to work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to repair a tide gate and culvert on Brooks Slough Road. The tide gate and culvert are very small and weren't included in a larger construction project to replace other culverts and tide...

To The Eagle: Regardless of being Democrat or Republican, representatives in Congress work to bring home the bacon. In this case, it’s $10 million with this thing called a National Heritage Area (NHA) -- a federal program supporting local history, culture and natural beauty. Commissioner Blair Brady has looked at this gift-horse. Even though he “has found no downside” Brady will still vote no -- only because he wants to represent his constituents. But who are these constituents? As far as I can tell, it’s a very vocal group of partisa...
To The Eagle: Just a note to say thanks for the Focus in The Eagle. I was getting so tired of the long drawn out letters on LNG and NHA ,taking over the paper. Then, on Focus I saw Jerry DeBriae's picture and the article of a home-town kid that has really done well. I knew his parents Ray and Marie DeBriae, very nice people and I know if they were living they would be so proud of him. Fred Johnson and his barn added to the hometown feeling, that is what I like about The Eagle, especially now that I am transplanted, I loved Cathlamet. Keep up...
