    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 2, 2023

The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors learned how a grant was being used for robotics education, how student growth has been affected by the pandemic, and the gains teachers and students are making, and heard other various reports last Tuesday. Wahkiakum County Washington State University Extension Director Carrie Backman and Jessica Vik, who was hired to be a 4-H liaison at WSD talked about a Career Connect WA grant and the robotics program they were involved in at the school...

  • On the line

    Mar 2, 2023

Members of the community rallied in support of classified staff at Wahkiakum School District, who have been without a contract since August. Classified staff includes paraeducators, office staff, food service, bus drivers, custodians, maintenance, technology, and food service employees. Classified staff are asking the district to increase their wages, which are lower than the pay rates at other similar districts in the state. One position that works closely with students makes $15.17/hour,...

  • County pursues opioid settlement

    Rick Nelson|Mar 2, 2023

Wahkiakum County officials took steps Tuesday to participate in settlements of two suits against opioid pill producers and distributors. Commissioners also proclaimed March as Red Cross Month, approved letters of support for Wahkiakum PUD's application for a grant to search for an alternate supply for the Puget Island Water System and discussed other items of interest. The county's share for the opioid suit settlements would probably be about $257,842 and be spread over 17 years, about $15,000 per year. The money is to be directed to programs...

  • Covid-19 update

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 2, 2023

One more case of covid-19 was reported this week according to the Washington Department of Health, bringing the cumulative total in Wahkiakum County to 640. The number of hospitalizations and deaths attributed to the virus stands at 50 and 11, respectively. Disclaimer: With the easy accessibility of at home tests, the actual number of active covid-19 cases and actual cumulative numbers in the county are hard to know. While 70.6 percent of the population in Washington state has received the prima...

  • Republican elephant should be retired

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: It’s my opinion that the Republican party’s emblematic elephant needs to be retired. That poor pachyderm is collapsing under the weight of its party’s last straw, denialism. A suitable new logo would be a sketch of Edvard Munch’s iconic artwork, ‘The Scream.’ The haunted face in that painting, an image of howling anxiety, eerily illustrates MAGA’s jaundiced view, eyes huge with imagined fears, mouth agape as if babbling “la-la-la,” with hands locked over the ears, refusing to hear unpalatable facts. This new GOP, like the Par...

  • CRT is actual history

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: To say I was shocked by Fox News being for entertainment only would do a disservice to my integrity. When they finally admitted it was when I was shocked, but only for a moment. When it was revealed that the powers that own and run the network were losing audience and money, they quickly reversed themselves and went back to telling sweet lies to the folks that wanted nothing to do with the actual truth. Of course their ratings along with audience went back to their previous levels. Somewhat along the same lines is the regrettable...

  • Liars, lies and people that believe them

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: If you wondered why FOX News promoted Trump’s unfounded assertion that the 2020 presidential election was stolen these last two years, the answer was recently made public by the Delaware Superior Court from evidence gathered during the discovery and deposition phase of Dominion Voting Systems Inc. 1.6 billion dollar liable and slander lawsuit against FOX News, Network LLC (CaseNo.N21C- 11-082-EMD). FOX’s internal company emails and related court depositions reveal that Rupert Murdoch - FOX Chairman, and TV hosts Tucker Car...

  • Paraeducator test needs reform, educators say

    Renee Diaz, Washington State Journal|Mar 2, 2023

A national test given to people who want to be paraeducators in public schools often slows the process and presents roadblocks for bilingual applicants, some educators say. Substitute House Bill 1015, sponsored by Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, D-Seattle, attempts to solve these problems. “As many of you are aware, school districts are not only dealing with a significant shortage of teacher applicants but also struggling to fill their para-pro positions,” said Rural Education Center Director Jim Kowalkowski. “While this bill will not compl...

  • The truth for a change

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: A letter in last week’s Eagle written by the liberal Town Crier loaded with a ton of personal beliefs purported to be facts can not go unchallenged. I grew up in New York City in integrated neighborhoods, went to school where I was the only White kid in my classes for years. I was one of only two whites in our large Cub Scout Den and Boy Scout Troop. I served in the Army with many black soldiers. I have been in three integrated Labor Unions. So I have been a member of the great American melting pot and referred to by my many Black...

  • Senate OK's roadside safety measures

    Renee Diaz, Washington State Journal|Mar 2, 2023

Installing automated vehicle speed cameras and other measures to improve highway safety were approved in separate bills by the state Senate Feb. 23. “Speed kills. Our work zones have lower posted speeds for very good reasons. This helps to prevent collisions with slower-moving work vehicles and helps to protect workers who are often outside of their vehicles,” said Mark McKechnie from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission testifying in support of ESSB 5272. There were 28 fatalities in work zones in the past three years. About 20% of acc...

  • Domestic violence bills improve safety for victims

    Alexandria Osborne, Washington State Journal|Mar 2, 2023

Victims of domestic violence will get more protection under a package of bills now moving through the state Legislature. Rep. Lauren Davis, D-Shoreline, is sponsoring House Bill 1715. The bill challenges the idea that domestic violence victims need to go into hiding and it holds the abusers accountable, she said. The law would initiate statewide requirements for electronic monitoring with victim notification, it changes the process that requires surrendering firearms and it creates provisions under which a domestic violence victim can terminate...

  • Children's Day brings dinosaur bill to House

    Alexandria Osborne, Washington State Journal|Mar 2, 2023

Children and grandchildren sat on laps and wandered the aisles of the House of Representatives for this year's Children's Day at the state Legislature, and many young observers played with toy dinosaurs as House members voted for a bill establishing an official state dinosaur. House Bill 1020, sponsored by Rep. Melanie Morgan, D-Parkland, establishes a fossil nicknamed "Suciasaurus Rex" as Washington state's official dinosaur. The fossil was discovered in 2012 on Sucia Island in San Juan...

  • Winter weather will be here for a bit longer

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 2, 2023

STILL WINTER--If you live in my neck of the woods, you woke this past Sunday, Feb. 26, with no power and lots of snow on the ground. The snow was very pretty but as the “dusting” of predicted snow turned into several inches, my enjoyment started to wane just a bit. Couple that with trees falling down and taking out power lines, which affected many over Ingalls Road, West Valley Road and along SR 4 from the rock pit to KM, that was not exactly welcomed. A big “thank you” to PUD crews for coming out once again and fixing a mess along Ingalls...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 2, 2023

Last Sunday I visited with the Building Committee for the Naselle Community Center. Those lovely and faithful folks are a joy to visit with. I talked with them about my history as a fundraiser/grantwriter/consultant with non-profits and gave them some of my experiences with both large and small organizations. I first came to Wahkiakum County in February of 2003 to offer a grantwriting class that turned out to be a good sized group. There are similarities among non-profits in our area, whether...

  • Naselle GRV School Board meeting was challenging

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 2, 2023

There are good reasons to serve on a school board, but there are also issues that challenge both the local Naselle GRV board members and the community. At the last meeting on February 21, a full agenda and an estimated 20 guests had some long discussions. An on-going issue from the January meeting was the hiring of a new interventionist by the board with funds from Pacific County. Several people from the school as well as the Pacific County Health Department, defended the purpose of the position and clarified her responsibilities. One teacher...
