  • Appreciation offered for Rick Nelson

    Jun 1, 2023

To The Eagle: My husband and I have been across-the-street neighbors of Mary Ann and Rick for almost 17 years. Through that time we have accumulated many charming memories with the Nelsons. Our paths crossed regularly as happens in small towns like ours. Rick and Mary Ann are widely known for their consistent goodwill and natural fellow-feeling, through the ups and downs that invariably come. The whole family is graced with good hearts, living their fine family values through their public and private lives. This letter is prompted by a memory t...

  • Former resident says goodbye

    Jun 1, 2023

To The Eagle: Allow me to thank Wahkiakum County and Cathlamet for the 13 plus years we lived in the Elochoman valley. Watched it grow from widely scattered farms and houses to what it is now with houses popping up like toadstools after an autumn rain. Admittedly, some are quite tasteful and then there are the others. The couple that bought our place are blessed to be surrounded by the best neighbors we've ever had. You know who you are and thanks from the bottom of our collective heart. They plan on doing what we weren't capable of and imagine...

  • Our money should only serve the USA

    Jun 1, 2023

To The Eagle: According to the May 25 article, “New laws and funding requested and supported by Secretary of State Steve Hobbs during the 2023 Legislative session will help ensure the integrity of Washington’s elections and improve access to the ballot for eligible voters.” Our legislators are hard at work; more new laws and restrictions supposedly to make our lives much easier. Whoopee! Now if they would just work together on lowering taxes for the American people and businesses; eliminate regulations, restrictions and fees; eliminate many...

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 1, 2023

Last Thursday, a crowd of Westend residents filed into Rosburg Hall for the first workshop in a series planned to address changing water levels in the Grays Bay Area, and it's impact on habitats and the people who live there. According to Jackson Blalock of Sea Grant, it was while working with the Port of Ilwaco in 2020 to find funds to address flooding at the Ilwaco marina, that they noticed that issues of flooding, erosion, sedimentation, and habitat change extended well beyond the port distri...

  • Car show Saturday at local fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 1, 2023

HERE WE GO AGAIN--It seems like yesterday that I said we were beginning the month of May yet, in the blink of an eye, I’m saying “Welcome to June!” I can only hope this month slows down a bit as I’m already behind on all the things I was going to do during the “slow times” at the beginning of this year! NICE STREAK--Memorial weekend was pretty decent and at least it wasn’t pouring down rain! We had some morning cloudiness and some breezy conditions, but for those of you working in your yards over the weekend, this was the perfect weather for th...

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 1, 2023

We are so sad at the news of the fire that destroyed the beautiful home of Dan and Clair Stephan out on Altoona Pillar Rock Road. Such a tragedy, but it's wonderful none of the 10 people in the house were hurt. Their home and yard were so wonderful. We are all praying for the family and thankful for all the firefighters who went out to help in the middle of the night last Saturday. We have so many reasons to be proud of our Naselle GRV high school athletes this spring. Our track/field and...

  • Two 8th Graders move on with honors

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 1, 2023

After interviewing the top seniors, it seemed fair to talk with two top eighth graders, too. With 4.0 grade averages for this year, Madelyn Dielman and Logan Wirkkala Scheller were good picks to chat with. Logan likes the small Naselle GRV school and has done well here after moving over from Warrenton. He plans on studying engineering, then getting a master's in accounting. Logan is the oldest of five children, so he regularly spends time with the younger kids and helps the family. He is a hard...
