With much of the initial preparations out of the way, painting should start this week on the Puget Island bridge. The Royal Bridge, Inc., crew has been stringing cables and attaching curtains and chain link fencing to prepare for painting. Once the curtains and screens are in place, they'll install sand blasting equipment and clean off the old paint all the way to the steel structure of the bridge. Traffic has been reduced to one lane to supply a work area for the contractor. The workers have in...
Wahkiakum students have been working on an exciting new exhibit entitled “Welcome Home: A Sunnier Historical Perspective of Wahkiakum County!” set to open at the River Life Interpretive Center at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa this weekend. Wahkiakum High School art teacher Sue Garn, Darla Mead, who teaches music to middle school and high school students, and Paul Lawrence, the middle school architecture teacher were the driving force behind this immense creative project. The exhibit “reflects the joy...
Last Thursday morning, John C. Thomas Middle School teacher Eric Hansen made his 10th annual trip with a class of eighth graders to Greenwood Cemetery, where they would be met by several members of the local VFW to decorate veterans' graves with flags for Memorial Day. After an introduction, local veteran Bob Roche spoke for a moment on the significance of Memorial Day and gave a brief history of the holiday. "Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day," Roche told the students. "It was...
[Editor's note: VFW Post Commander Bill Tawater read the following remarks from post member Bob Roche on Monday as veterans and their supporters gathered at Greenwood Cemetery.] As we observe Memorial Day, we do more than just carry on a tradition dating back to 1866, we also fulfill a commitment. Throughout history, those who serve and defend, those who have faced the greatest dangers and won the greatest battles, and those who die for their country receive the highest honors. Today we honor our fallen, but we also embrace a feeling of honor,...
To The Eagle: After attending the candidates forum last week, I came away with the lingering questions I always have after someone claims to be a conservative. What is conservative about being concerned about some woman making the wrenching personal decision in regard to whether or not to carry a fetus to term as opposed to getting an abortion? When some old guy stands in front of a crowd and proudly announces that he is ‘pro-life', it does remind me of the whiney little tattletale kid on the second grade playground. It makes me wonder why s...
To The Eagle: My Name is Matt Kuhl and I am running for Wahkiakum County Auditor. To your readers, I would like to share a bit about myself. Growing up in Cathlamet, I developed personal qualities only a small town can teach: selflessness, hard work, respect, caring for your neighbors, kindness, honesty, and much more. My whole life I have felt a need to help others. After graduating from Wahkiakum High School, I joined the US Army as a Cavalry Scout serving honorably for five years, deploying twice to Iraq and earning multiple Army...

To The Eagle: I have a message for the person who pepper sprayed my dog on East Sunny Sands Road last week: I just want you to know that not only did you traumatize my 13 pound, 12 inch tall dog, but you also traumatized my 5-year-old great grand-daughter when she got transfer in her eyes and nose. If you are not aware that pepper spray is oil based and transferable, then you should not use it. Lore Twiet Puget Island...
Wahkiakum Mule athlete Mckensi Fluckiger was incorrectly identified in a photo in last week's edition of Mule athletes heading to the state track and field meet. Also, in our Focus on Wahkiakum magazine, we incorrectly stated that Elmer Danielsen and Oscar Bergseng were brothers; they were actually brothers-in-law. We apologize for the error....
John Mitchell, who has been with KLOG since 1978 will retire from The KLOG Morning Show on Friday, June 1, a position he has held with co-host Kirc Roland and producer Ray Byers for over 25 years. “Having a 40-year career in radio is a feat in itself, but having a 40-year career at the same radio station is unheard of,” said KLOG General Manager John Paul. Paul added, “We’ve been extremely lucky to have the talents of John for so many years. We wish him well in his well-deserved retirement and look forward to the next phase of The KLOG Morning...
WEEKEND WAS NICE--The traffic was a bit heavy on Friday, but it sure was a nice day to start out this past Memorial Day weekend. Saturday saw some more clouds move in, but no rain, so it was perfect for doing some yard work, and Sunday was gorgeous. By Monday, which was Memorial Day, we had some more clouds but still a wonderful day. Considering parts of Maryland got hammered with massive rains and flash flooding and tropical storm Alberto was causing some havoc down south, I'd say we've been quite fortunate. I can only hope our upcoming...

Another really busy week. Last Friday we celebrated my oldest son’s 50th birthday with lots of surprises for him. His two younger brothers met him on the golf course and he was totally dumbfounded. They hadn’t been together in two years. Another friend also arrived from Oregon to make it a foursome. In the meantime, his wife was decorating a warehouse with black and gold decor, a catered dinner and many more family and friends awaited his arrival. Such a fun day, plus I had five of my children to visit with all weekend. On Saturday, the whole f...

On May 8, 2018, two years after he died, Wahkiakum County resident John Didricksen was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. It was a final dream, fulfilled posthumously by friends and family. Didricksen graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1966. According to his friend David Nelson, Didricksen had a learning disorder and never learned to read. Still, the Army didn’t hesitate to draft him. When his younger brother, Joseph, was called up, Didricksen, who had already served t...

John was born on December 7, 1947 to George and Marie (Markovich) Didricksen of Cathlamet and died (age 68) on May 8, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in Portland, OR. He attended...

The Wahkiakum Lions Club has announced that Terris Record is the February Student of The Month. Terris is a dedicated student which makes it hard to catch up with a busy, active senior. I'm sure you have seen him mentioned in conjunction with the baseball team. He is pictured here as he receives a check and a certificate of accomplishment from Carol McClain, Lions Club Secretary. Terris tells me he has plans to join the Air Force after graduation. Submitted by Carol McClain. Courtesy...
