NOT SO GREAT-- As I sit here on this Memorial Day, the rain is coming down in buckets and the wind is blowing and well, it's just not nice. A good deal of this Memorial Day weekend wasn't so great. It certainly wasn't the sunny, warm days that I’d hoped for with folks lying on the beach in the sun. Instead, folks had to keep the sweatshirts on and the boots and umbrellas handy. Hopefully you were in a drier spot than I was! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Christeena Lindsey, Justin Rainey, Tim Rushing, Gary E...

Wahkiakum County Undersheriff Steve Marshall thought he had an understanding with commissioners of Port District No. 2 about the use of an old office building and equipment garage at Skamokawa Vista Park. Port officials had used the office building for their office for years but this winter moved into a park model cabin in Vista Park, leaving the office vacant. The office sits on land owned by the non-functioning Skamokawa Park and Recreation District. County commissioners recently declared the district defunct and disbanded it. The county...
The effort to construct a building to house a proposed brewery at Cathlamet’s Elochoman Marina has stalled for a few weeks. Wahkiakum Port District No. 1 commissioners met May 24 to open bids for construction of the building. Three were submitted; all were rejected due to the prices, which ranged from $77,564 to $138,415. Drop Anchor Brewery partners had solicited an estimate from a local contractor which they included with their proposal to the port commissioners. Since then, the size of the proposed building has increased, and the c...
Wahkiakum County commissioners have outlined their next steps in development of a junk and nuisance ordinance. Coming off two public meetings in which audiences show overwhelming support for development of an ordinance to address collections of junked vehicles and similar items, commissioners will work with the prosecuting attorney's office to create their own draft. They'll also consult with the county planning commission and the property rights advisory board, sheriff's office, public works department and health department. "Let's look at...
Wahkiakum County commissioners appointed Patty Dursteler as manager of the Wahkiakum County Fair. The Wahkiakum Fair Board recommended she be hired. She is also a member of the fund-raising Wahkiakum Fair Foundation, and she agreed to take a sabbatical from that board while she serves as fair...

Department Administrator Sue Cameron said staff have been studying their space needs, and they have suggested remodeling a garage building at the Elochoman Campus to house...
A change in venue has breathed new life into Columbia River Kayaking, LLC, a local collective of kayak guides in Skamokawa. Ginni Callahan, a world class kayaker who lives on Puget Island, and another kayaker, Skamokawa resident Mark Whitaker, have found a permanent home for their fellow kayak guides at Skamokawa Landing. Before it breathed new life, it breathed a sigh of relief. The space they had been renting behind the Skamokawa store had seemed optimal. It was aesthetically pleasing and...

To The Eagle: The 12th annual Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale (P.I.G.Y.S.) is approaching rapidly. It’s the last weekend in June, which this year falls on the the 28th and 29th with Sunday the 30th optional. It’s been a great run for the past decade with enthusiastic neighbors and Island businesses and organizations (churches, Norse Hall, Farm Market, VFW.) We usually have around 50 vendors and draw about 500 carloads of customers. The cars all leave loaded with Island treasures and the participants end the weekend tired, happy and pre...
To The Eagle: Audiences were delighted by a film festival chronicling the film work of young film maker Elia Hoover in the High School library last Friday. During the thirty minute showing, Elia's talents spanned battle field scenes, intergalactic travel and old west gun fights. Elia Hoover's talents are unmistakable. As a former film maker myself, what impressed me most about Mr. Hoover's achievement was the perseverance. Making a film is a mammoth undertaking, somehow he fought through the self doubt and limited resources and made several...
To The Eagle: A couple of weeks ago there was a door-to-door collection of food for the food banks. I was told that the food would be distributed equally between the two food banks that operate in this county. As a user of these foods banks I am very concerned. I visited the Wahkiakum Food Bank and their shelves were stuffed with food to the point that there was food on the bottom shelves for holiday giving. There are such wonderful caring people in this county to help out the less fortunate. The following week I visited the Helping Hand Food...
