    Athletes from local high schools earned medals at last week's state Class 2B track and field meet at Eastern Washington University, Cheney. Naselle Comet senior Kyle Burkhalter won the championship in the high jump with a mark of 6'2". The effort came after he had injured a shoulder and scratched out of the triple jump. Comet teammate Tylor Nortrup, a junior, tied for third in the pole vault with a mark of 11'. The two finishes gave the Comets 15.5 points, good enough for 18th place in the team standings.     Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge biologist Al Clark is retiring after nearly 31 years with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. He began his career here in 1977 and will finish it here at the end of this month. Clark has seen changes positive and negative in his time. Coyote predation has become an issue where it wasn’t such a problem in the beginning. However, many positive changes have occurred.     The six-member String of Pearls band swings into Cathlamet on June 14, for the Pioneer Church Association’s second presentation of its 2008 concert series.     The Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Pool starts its 40th summer season June 16 with a full day schedule. Lap swimming is from 6:30-7:30 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Water aerobics is Monday-Friday from 7:30-8:30 a.m.. Swim lessons this year will be: Session 1, June 16-27; Session 2, July 7-18 and Session 3 July 28-August 8.     The Wahkiakum School Board met May 21 to discuss land options and athletic fields. Mayor Dick Swart told the board he has commissioned an appraisal of the town hall/library building. An initial report suggests the building is not satisfactory for current or any intended use. A final report is expected in about four weeks.     Three Wahkiakum County officials toured a Maryland liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility to learn about safety and security. Making the trip were Commissioner George Trott, Sheriff Dan Bardsley and Undersheriff Jon Dearmore. Bardsley and other local officials have been meeting for some time with NorthernStar Natural Gas, who has proposed an LNG receiving plant at Bradwood, Ore., across the Columbia River from Puget Island.     The Wahkiakum Mule golf team finished in seventh place at the state Class 1B/2B Golf Tournament last week at Lake Padden Golf Course, Bellingham. Northwest Christian won the team championship with a score of 128.6.     Puget Island resident Lisa Marsyla on Monday announced she would be a Democrat candidate for Wahkiakum County commissioner. Marsyla will be a candidate for the Commissioner District 1 position on the board of commissioners, now held by her ex-husband, George Trott.
