  • Childhood interest leads to mural art

    Diana Zimmerman|May 28, 2015

If you've seen the mural on the brewery at the marina, then you are familiar with artist Jade Lewis' work. Lewis, along with his wife Donna, who opened the music studio, are newcomers to Cathlamet and have quickly settled in, making friends and sharing their gifts. "We just fell in love with this place," Lewis said. "It's a sacrifice because I still have to drive back and forth to Portland each day. I think in three years when I retire, it will be well worth it." In the meantime they are making...

  • Remember

    Diana Zimmerman|May 28, 2015

Monday morning's Memorial Day Service at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet began with a welcome from the local VFW post's commander, Danny Eaton. The flag was ceremonially brought to half mast, and Vietnam veteran, Bob Roche took a few minutes to reflect on why the day is recognized: to honor those who have fallen while fighting for our freedom. Roche said, "G.K. Chesterton once wrote: 'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.'...

  • Board rejects catch-up raise for elected officials

    Rick Nelson|May 28, 2015

Just as it has been since 2009, there will be no raise for Wahkiakum County's elected officials this year. Citing unexpected sources of revenue, the county's elected officials on Tuesday asked the county board of commissioners to boost their salaries 15 percent to make up for the lack of pay increases they've had since the start of the Great Recession. The cost of living has seriously eroded their salaries' buying power, they said. Commissioner Dan Cothren supported the request and moved to approve it. However, Commissioners Mike Backman and...

Wahkiakum County officials will hold two special meetings to gather public comment on a proposed solid waste nuisance ordinance. The first meeting will be next Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at the Grays River Valley Center in Rosburg. The second will be June 9, 6:30 p.m., in the third floor meeting room of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse, Cathlamet. The proposed ordinance resulted from meetings last year in which citizens expressed concern of old vehicles and other items left along roads and on private property. A committee of citizens and officials...

  • The Market at 10

    May 28, 2015

Last Friday was opening day for the Puget Island Farmer's Market and marked their 10 year anniversary. People had been visiting at a pretty steady rate that afternoon, according to Carol Carver, who owns Island's End Farm along with her husband, George Exum. The Vintage Gypsies, made up of David McKenzie, Beth Sheets and Pete Davis, mostly stayed dry under the tent as they played. Patrick McKay-Beach was busy getting rid of last year's inventory of meats and delighted to share that he would be a...

  • Chinook study focuses on off-channel areas

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|May 28, 2015

It has long been known that healthy habitats off the main channels of rivers is important to migrating juvenile salmon and steelhead, even if for very short periods of time, and more off-channel habitat improvement projects should be pursued to preserve a diversity of life histories, according to a recent study. While not all juvenile fish stop on their migration to the sea to feed and grow in these off-channel habitats, the study finds that those fish that do stop can spend just a few hours in these refuges or they can hang out for up to 25...

  • Keep fighting the pressures from Olympia

    May 28, 2015

To The Eagle: I miss the people, culture and geography of Wahkiakum County. Our time living in Rosburg and getting to know and like the people of the county was wonderful. We moved to Kalama to be closer to children, a common goal of our generation it seems. But I have a heartfelt message for you all: whatever you do, keep fighting the pressures from Olympia, it’s your only salvation to preserve what you have. The federal and state government programs, agencies and the powers and money they flaunt in your face are akin to drugs, with absolute a...

  • Dawn of a new era?

    May 28, 2015

To the Eagle:  A word of reassurance to Paul Schreiber, who wrote the letter a couple of weeks ago expressing dismay at the inordinate and inappropriate amount of ink and space devoted to Bruce Jenner and his newly acquired sex or gender or attitude (or whatever we are calling it these days) and matching wardrobe. I, too, was well into a seizure of head-shaking and eye-rolling until I realized that a minor miracle had occurred. In the same press interview in which he revealed his transgender journey, Jenner also outed himself as a c...

  • Car show Saturday at Skamokawa Fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|May 28, 2015

NOT ALL THAT GREAT--If you lived out in West Valley, you would have found a good deal of your holiday weekend cloudy and drizzly and not quite what we hoped for or expected. While some were enjoying drier conditions and temps in the 60s, my thermometer was reading about 10 degrees cooler, so it was definitely jacket time here on Friday and Saturday. Luckily, it cleared up a little bit more on Monday, and temperatures were mild, so the whole weekend wasn't totally nasty but certainly not the best either. Considering the flooding and tornadoes...

Bob Kizziar acted as auctioneer, and other Tsuga members helped move items, hand out paddles, answer questions and take payments. Carol Peacock and Ryan Smith had fun acting as security, though it wasn't needed. A small crowd gathered under the tent with paddles raised for artwork as it was...
