Reigha Niemeyer has known for many years that if she wanted to go to college, she would have to pay for it. That's one reason this year's valedictorian at Wahkiakum High School is graduating with a 4.0, but it may also be another expression of the competitiveness that is so central to this four and even five sport athlete. "I've always had good grades," Niemeyer said. "I don't know why. If I didn't do good, I would be failing myself." Like both her parents before her, Niemeyer will continue her...
Graduating with a 3.951 GPA, Malia Ana Silva is the salutatorian for Wahkiakum High School's Class of 2023. Silva is Wahkiakum High School's ASB president, Key Club president, and her class president, and while classmates and teachers may recognize her leadership ability and Silva herself may willingly step in when she recognizes a need, it's not something that comes naturally. "I think I was just kind of thrown into it," Silva said. "My class needed a leader, and everyone decided that was me...

Ocean Beach Hospital and Medical Clinics (OBHMC) asked voters in April to consider a bond to improve access to local health care. The measure required a 60 percent supermajority per state law, and it failed by just five votes (59.93 percent). Almost 60 percent of voters saw the benefit of increasing access to health care for rural residents. That is why the hospital’s Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to place the measure back on the ballot for the August 1, 2023, primary election. “It’s clear our community sees the value in ensur...

NICE AND BREEZY--This past weekend saw us basking in some sunshine here but thankfully it was not the blistering hot kind and instead, was of the moderate variety with a very good breeze, so I have to admit, it was very much more to my liking than last week. We even got a bit of dampness on Sunday and Monday which I hadn’t expected! The week ahead is looking to be sunny for a couple days when you’ll be reading this and then cloudy for most of the holiday weekend with rain holding off until Tuesday, so that would be nice, as there are many who w...

We met teams who practiced everyday for hours, and had been doing the challenge for years. Despite this being our s...

Haley Eastham is one of the most impressive students I have talked with. She is the young woman we older women want to see succeed as far as she wants. Even with a challenging health situation, she never backs off. She is not only beautiful, but also poised, thoughtful and very intelligent. She expressed appreciation for her parents, "Without them, I don't know what I'd do." Haley wants to be a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse in Anesthesiology). This fall she will enter Corban University (Warri...
