    For a change, commercial and recreational salmon fishermen found cause to agree at a town hall meeting in Cathlamet May 7. They told representatives of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife that fishermen on the lower Columbia were shortchanged in the 2008 spring season, and they want the department to negotiate harder for them in the future.     Students from Shelley Olsen’s class were treated to a guest speaker last Friday. David Hansen, the only child of Julia Butler-Hansen, brought antiques and stories from his personal collection to share with the students. “Cathlamet is one of the oldest settlements on the Columbia River,” he told the class of 23 third and fourth graders. It was founded by James Birnie in 1846.     Homeowners with tideland who would like to start their own shellfish gardens and help keep the Willapa clean in the process will have an opportunity to purchase oyster, clam, mussel and geoduck “seed”. A shellfish seed sale for the public will be held at the Taylor Shellfish Farms Willapa Location at 3201 Bay Ave, Ocean Park from 9 a.m. to noon on May 31.     Tuesday’s PUD meeting brought discussion of a public questionnaire and commissioner pay raises. Auditor Erin Wilson told the board that the directional boring equipment has arrived and the crew is happy with it. She said someone from the company will be showing them how it works on Thursday.     The Wahkiakum Mule girls track and field teams finished second in team competition at the Southwest District Meet last Saturday at Naselle, and many local athletes qualified for the state meet. Tacoma Baptist won the boys meet with 106.5 points; the Mule boys were eighth with 36 points. Northwest Christian won the girls with 106 points; the Mules were second with 70.     The Wahkiakum Mule golf team won its second consecutive district championship and competed in the state Class 2B tournament this week. In Tuesday's opening round at Lake Padden Golf Course, Bellingham, Cody Olsen and Cole Claussen had tied for 17th with 88s; both advanced to Wednesday's final round.     The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center in Cathlamet is again sponsoring a week long camp for seventh and eighth grade girls from June 16-21 at the Hansen Center. The leadership camp has been a popular one in the past when the girls spent a week at the Center having classes on government, history, manners and entertaining, caring for historic artifacts, writing and public speaking.     This year the Wahkiakum County Fair will celebrate its 100th year. It is a new century that brings a new manager. Sarah Lawrence, a native of Oregon took over the position on April 1. Prior to being in Wahkiakum County, Lawrence studied advertising and communications abroad in London. She worked as an account director for a global advertising agency, working mostly with government accounts listed on the stock exchange.     Dr. Keith Wright will soon be leaving Wahkiakum County for a new adventure. On June 25, Wright and his family will be headed for Brownstown, Pennsylvania. Dr. Wright’s last day in the office is today. Dr. Wright has been practicing in Cathlamet for 13 years and decided it was time to move on. Ultimately, Dr. Wright wants to pursue more overseas mission work.
