  • Julia Butler Heritage Center/House to be open

    The Julia Butler Hansen House, the oldest house in Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County, will be open Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The house was the residence of the Kimball, Butler and Hansen families for 116 years. It was the home of the late Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen and was also the home of Maude Kimball Butler, Julia's mother. Maude was a noted Southwest Washington watercolor artist and educator.     The Friends of the Willapa Wildlife Refuge announce the winners of their annual scholarship. This year's recipients are Benjamin Bradlee, a 2017 graduate of Ilwaco High School and Katherine Johnson, graduating from Wahkiakum High School. Both students have similar backgrounds in their school history. Each has maintained high grades throughout their four year programs with college level courses as part of their academic work. In April, Commisioneer Mike Backman asked us for one month to keep as best we could a tally, of people using the facility. So we put up sign up sheets in every room, that is used by the public.     Several women on the Wahkiakum Mules track and field team qualified for the district meet at last Friday’s Central 2B Sub-district meet in Kalama, but the season ended for all the Mule men. According to Coach Eric Hansen, athletes had to have a top six finish in field events or the 1600m and 3200m races, or be a top four finisher in a lane event to qualify for district.     The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team took second place in the district tournament on Monday after losing 10-2 to Adna. The District 4 Championship game between the Mules and the Pirates was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was postponed because of rain. The day changed, but the rain didn’t.
