Linda Hartung of the Cathlamet Woman's Club is headed to Baltimore this June for leadership training at the General Federation of Women's Clubs Annual Convention. "The Woman's Club has wonderful opportunities." Hartung is co-president of the local chapter with JoAnn Prestegard. When Prestegard, who is also active at the...

  • Commissioners support change of Jim Crow names

    Rick Nelson|May 12, 2016

Wahkiakum County's board of commissioners voted Tuesday to support a petition to change the names of geographic landmarks in the county which incorporate the name Jim Crow. The issue arose a month ago when a Seattle state senator contacted Commissioner Dan Cothren to talk about the public sentiment for changing the name of Jim Crow Creek, Point and Hill. Jim Crow refers to the oppressive laws and codes adopted in the South after the Civil War and which were used to oppress African Americans. When first approached, Commissioners Dan Cothren and...

  • County experiences housing shortage

    Diana Zimmerman|May 12, 2016

Wahkiakum County is a nice place to live. It’s so nice that people are having a hard time finding affordable housing. They are having a hard time finding any housing at all for that matter. “We have a huge problem,” Wahkiakum Health and Human Services Director Sue Cameron said. “There is nowhere for people to live. It doesn’t matter if they are professionals who have come here for work or people that want to return to the community to be near their family. There is nothing for them.” “I...

  • Sewer system limitations scuttle Port 2 plans

    Rick Nelson|May 12, 2016

Editor's note: The original version of this story contained errors regarding names and affiliations. They have been corrected. Three weeks ago, commissioners of Port District 2 were ready to purchase property on Skamokawa Creek for boat moorage and overnight lodgings. Then reality hit. This past week, commissioners of the Skamokawa Water and Sewer District informed port officials that the Skamokawa sewer system can't take any more connections. In fact, the system probably doesn't have enough capacity to handle the port's planned laundromat....

Now he is 21 years old and has never left scouting since he started. He is a scout leader in the troop that he was a member of in 2008. His mother is also a scout leader so we eat and sleep scouting and I can take all your time to tell you what this great program has done for my family and many other’s. • Jim Crow represents disgraceful period

    May 12, 2016

Jim Crow represents disgraceful period Editor’s note: We accidentally left a sentence out of this letter last week, so we’re reprinting it entirely. We apologize for the error. To The Eagle: Fifty years ago I had the honor of serving in the United States Marine Corps. Six or seven times during my time at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, I was assigned to funeral details. This involved riding on a bus to a country churchyard and firing a 21-gun salute at the burial of a fallen Marine. These Marines had two things in common: they were all black and...

  • You should be aware of shoreline plan

    May 12, 2016

To The Eagle: To some, I’m sure what I’m saying here will seem insensitive. To me, it is being pragmatic and realistic. An update to the Wahkiakum County Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) is being developed by the Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) in conjunction with the Washington Department of Ecology. That plan, as currently drafted, will significantly limit how a large number of property owners in the county may use their property. I find that to be a much more important issue for public involvement than changing the name of geog...

Representatives from the Town of Cathlamet met with Garrett Phillips, a coastal planner with the Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) to go over recent changes to the Shoreline Management Plan and how it would affect the town last Wednesday. Most of the discussion centered around wetland buffers. “Part of the purpose of the buffer is to filter nutrients, sediment, and pollutants that would run off from the developed area to the stream,” Phillips said. • Great White Tail Run Saturday, 8:30 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|May 12, 2016

PRETTY NICE--Last weekend was Mother's Day weekend and while Sunday wasn't as warm and toasty as Saturday, it was still pretty nice later on in the day as the winds blew the cloudiness away and we saw the sun again in the afternoon. I have to admit, the air was much nippier by late afternoon, but hey, it wasn't pouring down rain, so that was a blessing. Mid-week we are to see some pretty toasty temperatures but it looks like we may have to bring out the umbrellas for the weekend. Sadly, our neighbors to the north in Alberta, Canada are dealing...
