The Blanche Bradley Memorial Library Foundation is accepting donations of gently used books for its upcoming book sale to benefit the Cathlamet Library. Books can be left at the library, located in the River Street Meeting Room, afternoons Tuesday through Saturday. Post Office Food Drive--Today marks the beginning of a week long food drive organized through the Cathlamet Post Office. Donation bags will be distributed this week in your mail with Saturday marked as the pick up day. Due to a staff shortage, the post office may not be able to collect the bags from each home, so they have set up a donation barrel within the Cathlamet Post Office lobby. Wahkiakum PUD commissioners heard reports from the foremen of the utility’s water and electric departments during their May 8 meeting. At the commissioners’ request, the two department heads have begun to regularly report to the board about their projects. Wahkiakum County commissioners voted Tuesday to dissolve the defunct Skamokawa Park and Recreation District. The district was formed in the 1970s and operated the former Skamokawa Library. Interest in it waned, and Port District No. 2 used its building as an office for Skamokawa Vista Park until this winter when the port bought a park model cabin and installed it in the park for an office. Wahkiakum County commissioners approved hiring of a manager for the county fair and acted on other business on Tuesday. The board approved the recommendation of the fair board to rehire former manager Becky Ledtke. The commission had closed down Ledtke's former position in February and subsequently worked with the fair board to restructure the position and its financing. Columbia Land Trust announced April 30 that it has completed the purchase of 109-acre Kerry Island in Westport Slough, a roughly 11-mile side channel of the Columbia River. The parcel is located about four miles from the community of Westport and eight miles from Clatskanie. Once restored, Kerry Island will provide permanent refuge to numerous wildlife species, including all 13 species of salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act as well as the federally endangered Columbia River population of Columbian white-tailed deer....

Hunters have through May 22 to apply for special hunting permits for fall deer, elk, mountain goat, moose, bighorn sheep, and turkey seasons in Washington state. Permit winners will be selected through a random drawing conducted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) in late June. The rate of unemployment in Wahkiakum County has declined slightly over the past year, according to the latest figures from the state Employment Security Department. The figures said 190 of 1,540 people in the labor force, 12.1 percent, were unemployed in March. In February, 200 of 1,560 in the labor force, 12.9 percent, were unemployed. The county's unemployment rate was sixth highest in the state in March. In March 2012, 190 of 1,480 in the labor force, 13 percent, were unemployed.
