  • Bottle tagging project raises alcohol awareness

    On May 1, volunteers from the Wahkiakum Sheriff's Office, Wahkiakum Community Network, and DATAP, a local substance abuse prevention youth group got together to implement Project Bottle Tagging. The tags remind adults that if they supply alcohol to minors, it is a crime punishable with a fine of $5,000 and/or one year in jail.     Wahkiakum County commissioners will host a town hall meeting next Wednesday to discuss the recently completed spring salmon season. Staff of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife have said they will attend, and county commissioners are also inviting Governor Chris Gregoire and other elected officials.     Around the buoy sailboat races will be held on May 24 during Memorial Day weekend in Cathlamet. These races will include a separate "not flying sails" start and PHRF handicapping. The emphasis, besides fun, will be for shorter courses and with more starts.     A Colorado oil company hopes to be drilling an exploratory well in Wahkiakum County by this fall. Pat Moran, land manager for Venoco, Inc., told Wahkiakum County commissioners Tuesday the from hopes to find a field of natural gas under the county.
