  • Razor clam dig reduced to one day this week

Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife|May 7, 2015

Three days of a four-day razor clam dig have been canceled on all ocean beaches because of public health concerns, state shellfish managers said Wednesday. The opening will continue as planned Thursday on Long Beach and Twin Harbors beaches after state health officials cleared that day's dig. Levels of domoic acid, detected through routine testing, have been on the rise since late Monday and could exceed state health guidelines by this weekend. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is canceling the dig May 8-10 as a precaution,...

  • Ecology prevails in biosolids suit

    Rick Nelson|May 7, 2015

Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow learned April 29 that the state supreme court has declined to hear his appeal of a court of appeals decision that would invalidate the county's biosolids ordinance. This means the state Department of Ecology prevails, and the county doesn't have the authority to prohibit the application of two of three classes of biosolids on land in the county. Responding to concerns from Westend residents about the application of Class B biosolids at a Grays River Valley farm, commissioners adopted an ordinanc...

In a special meeting last Thursday, the Cathlamet Town Council approves a contract change order that will replace Main Street streetlights with decorative lights. Approval of the $34,000 change order opens the door for a contractor to start installing the lights. Council members told consulting engineer Thomas Skillings they wanted the work done by the start of the Bald Eagle Festival in July. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said that grant funding agencies should compensate the town for the change order. If the council had cancelled...

  • Commissioners act on personnel requests

    Rick Nelson|May 7, 2015

Wahkiakum County Commissioners handled a variety of business at their meeting Tuesday. The board rejected a request from Assessor Bill Coons to allow him to hire a commercial appraiser to replace a departing employee. Coons said the office needs a qualified residential and commercial appraiser, and he isn't qualified for commercial appraisals. Previous appraisers have had commercial appraisers, but that has been lost to employee turnover. The union contract places a commercial appraiser in pay class 6, but it has historically been pay class 7....

  • Really not news

    May 7, 2015

To The Eagle: Honestly, I don’t care what anyone does in their bedroom or in the choices they make about themselves, but really, almost a full page in last week’s paper about what Bruce Jenner’s new feminine wardrobe is shaping up to be? Come on, you should have a better understanding of what is real news in our community than to report on that. If these choices are so personal and painful, why not keep them within a person’s circle of family and friends? There’s nothing anyone can do or say and then expect universal approval and/or acceptanc...

  • Wahkiakum Mule Golf

    Coach Nick Vavoudis|May 7, 2015

After a three hour drive to Ocean Shores on Monday, the weather got ugly just as we got out of the car. Intermittent rain and a 25 mph wind in our face for the first three holes seemed to affect everyone except Elliot Haney of Wahkiakum and Taylor Schisler of Ilwaco. They were the only two that kept their golf balls on the course and shared the lead by three strokes starting the 4th hole which also was dead into the wind. That's where a series of bad breaks ruined the Mule senior's round. A tree branch caught his drive, leaving a bad lie inches...
