  • Budget crunch slows hiring, work in sheriff's office

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2009

With a shortfall of revenues from state managed timber sales projected for 2010, Wahkiakum County commissioners are already talking about putting the brakes on spending. Tuesday, the board met with Sheriff Dan Bardsley, officers from his department, and other county officials to discuss spending and personnel needs. Long-time Deputy Sheriff Hans York will retire at the end of May, and Bardsley wants to replace him immediately. He has also applied for federal COPS grants to restore another officer to the staff, which lost two officers in last...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2009

The Wahkiakum County fair has been part of our community for over 100 years, showcasing the best and brightest of our beautiful county. Each year we face new challenges, but with the help and continued support of the community, we have gone from strength to strength. With a brand new facility on the horizon, the fairgrounds will finally be able to offer a unique venue, competitive with the surrounding areas. Next year the fair will receive no county funding, so we must pull together to raise funds. The fair board and I are committed and plan...

  • The trials of teaching a working dog

    Caroline Jennings, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2009

“Don’t they make dogs that do this?!” It was a war cry born of complete frustration during the many times that Loren and I ended up chasing our livestock around a field/up a road/out of the neighbor’s vegetable patch. And of course there are dogs for that very purpose, and so we got ourselves one. Piper, a red and white border collie, bounded into our humble abode last May, bringing with her the first of much mud, poo, and bits of half eaten, unidentifiable organic matter. Since then, she has stopped hurtling around for about half a second....

  • Revised Grays River habitat plan in the works

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2009

The Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board hopes to have an update this summer of the habitat project planning that proved to be so controversial last fall. The agency presented a list of possible projects designed to improve habitat for salmon and steelhead last fall. Grays River Valley residents strongly opposed the list, saying the projects put fish over people and wouldn't do anything to ease the valley's continuing troubles with flooding. "Based on that input, we're proposing to work with the consulting team to amend the draft study to...

  • PUD considers transformer moves

    Sunny Manary|May 7, 2009

Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie told the board of directors this week that it doesn’t appear the $200,000 cap for the Bonneville Power Administration portion of the new Cathlamet substation will be needed for that project at this time. What he said he would like to do is to reallocate a portion of that amount for the purchase of the Grays River spare transformer. While he isn’t in a position to make the purchase, Tramblie said he wanted to make the board aware of his plans. He said it would be several weeks before a final decision will nee...

  • Pizza restaurant moves to new quarters

    May 7, 2009

PJ's Pizza has moved from its former location in Rosedale to the restaurant building in Cathlamet at the intersection of SR 4 and Una Street. Owner Paul Gragg said the move will allow him to expand the menu. He's calling the new restaurant "PJ's Pizza, Burgers, Breakfast and More." Gragg said he has restaurants in two other locations and has wanted to expand the menu as he has done elsewhere. "The kitchen in the old restaurant was too small, and this building was basically the only other option in town," he said. The menu starts with...

  • Online education attracting to students

    Sunny Manary|May 7, 2009

A new trend in education is online learning. Students are able to “choice out” to different programs within the state. Predictions say in 10 years, 50 percent of education seeking students will be using online programs, or an alternate learning experience (ALE). This will be a change in the appearance of the educational process. Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Bob Garrett said whether or not the district is in favor of it, other districts are establishing programs. They usually get started by the supporters saying there needs to be an...

  • Officials scramble to find clinic solution

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2009

In a week of rapid developments, Wahkiakum County commissioners are now thinking they'll try to sell the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic to a private entity. County officals have wanted to divest themselves of the clinic since buying it over four years ago from PeaceHealth. They've been able to use reserves to cover clinic operating deficits, but they now face their own revenue problems. Commission-appointed advisory and governance boards have worked to bring financial stability to the clinic, but they say the continuing funding trouble has...

  • Health officials dealing with swine flu cases

    May 7, 2009

County health department officials from Wahkiakum County and Southwest Washington continue to monitor the advance of the swine flu pandemic. While the virus has now hit residents of Washington and Oregon, health officials say it is not as virulent as feared. Wahkiakum County Health Department Administrator Judy Bright said Tuesday the county will soon receive anti-viral medicine for people who contract the disease. "We're working closely with the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic, which is reported an average of two patients a day with flu-like...
