My father's father came from Sweden. He passed on some cultural traits that my father passed to me. One very important trait is that one should Never act as if one is special. At least that's how the lore came to me. And so, here comes Monday, May 1. Sheriff Mark Howie and yet unknown people conspired to create a community welcome as I came home to go into hospice care. We followed Sheriff Howie down Columbia Street and on to Main Street. What a sight on Main. People were lined up from one end t...

To The Eagle: Dear Sir, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones every day. May you find strength, comfort and peace through these very difficult times. I hope somehow the community finds a way to keep The Wahkiakum Eagle newspaper going as I know, Sir, is your hope also. I for one, thank you and the Nelson Family for the many years you provided the newspaper with the information needed to make informed decisions about candidates in elections, letting us know what the county commissioners and town council were doing, keeping us...
To The Eagle: Sadly we are losing Rick Nelson, publisher and owner of The Wahkiakum County Eagle. The treatments he’s been enduring for some time, are no longer effective. As a friend, very sad to lose him, as a community member, sad to lose him and possibly The Wahkiakum Eagle. I have had a subscription for The Eagle since moving here in 1995. I also kept my Chinook Observer subscription, now for 40 or so years. I feel the importance of local papers is without measure, so I hope somehow, someone will carry on. You will be sorely missed when y...

My friends, words help, but don't fully illustrate feelings. Even when looking at someone, it takes the eyes to fully reveal what's going on in a person's head and heart. When I saw Rick's opening words in last week's article about having days to live, I was in the commons room at the Naselle GRV High School. I had picked up the Eagle from my mailbox as I left to drive to Naselle. I didn't look at the front page till I was waiting for Kolten Lindstrom, valedictorian, to join me. I know my face m...

In any school in America, the Valedictorian is the top member of the graduating class. They are first in their class with the highest grade average and most likely a good citizen who was student body or class president, or vice-president in Kolten's case. These graduates usually have shown leadership, citizenship, concern for others and is respected by teachers as well as students.
