JC Thomas Warriors did not let soggy weather put a damper on their track meet. On April 25, the Warriors hosted a four team meet at the Wahkiakum High School track. While spectators took strides to stay out of the rain, light showers did not seem to faze middle school athletes. The Wahkiakum Lady Mules softball team’s struggles in Central League play continued against the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves last Friday afternoon in Randle. SO-SO--Last weekend promised to bring some sunshine to our area but after a brief amount on Saturday morning, the clouds took over and it was rather gloomy all day. Robert Lee Swift, 62, of Longview died April 24, 2012 at St. John Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1950 in Longview to John Donald and Verna (Malakowsy) Swift. Our loving wife and mother Donna Irene Gatens Klint went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at her home in Deep River, as the result of cancer. She was 72 years old. Donna was born November 21, 1939 in Nemah, the daughter of Lucy “Nettie” Slater and James Francis “Frank” Gatens. The doctor had to come by boat out to Twin Point on the Willapa Bay for her delivery. Unemployment in Wahkiakum County dropped from 12.3 percent in February to 11.9 percent in March, according to the latest statistics from the state Employment Security Department. The figures said 180 of 1,510 people in the labor force were out of work in March, 11.9 percent, compared to 190 of 1,550 in December, 12.3 percent, and 230 of 1,560 in March, 2011, 14.6 percent. Local officials are continuing their search to find funds to save the eroding shoreline and dike on Steamboat Slough Road. The Columbia River is eating into the bank of the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the White-tailed Deer, and the threat of a major slippage has led Wahkiakum County to close Steamboat Slough Road. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has said it doesn't have money in its budget to protect the shoreline.
