The Pioneer Community Association announced the first of five performances for their Monthly Medley of Music. This year begins with a group of artists with roots in the Astoria area. The performance will feature Jacquetta Purtle on piano, Janet Bowler on flute, and David Crabtree on guitar and vocals by soprano Laurie Drage. Todd Denny, a nationally recognized speaker in violence prevention, will host a workshop at the John C. Thomas Middle School on May 9 at 3:10 p.m. The workshop will teach simple, non-violent intervention skills, and will cover the topics of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and victim support. Skamokawa Center will be offering a Mother's Day kayak tour this year, on May 13. They will be paddling from Cathlamet, with the tide, along the cliffs of the Lower Gorge. After lunch, paddlers will return to Cathlamet by way of Birnie Slough. The Center is offering special pricing for the tour: Mothers can paddle for $60, people accompanied by their mothers for $70. Wahkiakum PUD continued its discussion Tuesday of the proposed expansion of the Western Wahkiakum water system to the Oneida and Salme neighborhoods. The board discussed funding the project and the possibility of using a $216,000 grant to pay for half of the work, with a 45 percent match of $180,000 from the PUD and the remaining amount split between those who would benefit from the new water system. LCC’s Sarah Todd was Outstanding Debate Speaker at the Northwest Community College Speech Championship Tournament April 27-28 at Clark College. Twenty debate teams from six community colleges participated. Todd and her debate partner, Skyler Gregory (who was Second Debate Speaker) placed first in Debate. Volunteers with an interest in the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition are invited to help out at a living-history event scheduled at Cape Disappointment State Park near Ilwaco this July. The event, called “Clark’s Campsite,” is scheduled for July 20 through 22, on Waikiki Beach at Cape Disappointment State Park. Costumed characters of the Lewis and Clark Expedition will portray the events of November 18, 1805, when Captain William Clark and 11 men camped near Waikiki Beach. The Elochoman Hatchery is running it's Kids Fish Free event starting this last weekend in April and running every weekend during May. The hatchery has stocked two ponds at the Burns rock pit with trout for kids 14 and under to catch. The fish are raised by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). As a WDFW facility, the Elochoman Hatchery incorporates the fish into their program and places the fish in the ponds in conjunction with the landowners. April 24 Comet Invitational The Wahkiakum Mule girls finished first and the boys second in their divisions at the Naselle Comet Invitational Track and Field Meet April 26. Mule Toby David was named the Most Outstanding Male Athlete. He set a new Wahkiakum High School record while winning the 100m in 11.3 seconds. Two ocean beaches will open for the last razor clam dig of the spring season starting May 4, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced April 30. Twin Harbors will open for digging on morning tides May 4, joined by Long Beach May 5 and 6. Each day’s dig on those beaches must be completed by noon. WDFW approved the digs after marine toxin tests showed the clams were safe to eat. Puget Island resident Muriel Prestegard was hired Tuesday as 2007 Wahkiakum County Fair Manager. Wahkiakum County officials on Tuesday prepared to start staff and program cuts as a means of dealing with a revenue decline.
