A large crowd gathered last Wednesday morning for a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate Wahkiakum PUD’s new substation on Jacobson Road. Representatives from Bonneville Power Administration, PUD contract engineering firm Brown & Kysar, the Town of Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, and Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce were in attendance, as were many PUD employees. The Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum will open for the season beginning Saturday, May 4, from 1-4 p.m. and then Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. until the last Sunday in October. Society members are in the process of moving the logging and farming equipment out to the new building but it will not be open for viewing until Bald Eagle Festival. This past Saturday firefighters from Wahkiakum Fire District #4 practiced their wildland firefighting skills in Long Beach with Pacific County Fire Districts and Long Beach Fire Department to prepare for this year's wildfire season. Training included progressive hose lays, back burning, digging fire line, pump and roll and tender shuttle.
