Wahkiakum County commissioners cruised through a relatively quiet meeting Tuesday including a request to modify personnel classifications in District Court. Judge Bill Faubion asked the board to move two District Court staff members to new classes in recognition of their long service to the county. The two clerks have been in the office for 26 and 22.5 years, he said. The county's pay scale for longevity ends at 12 years, he said, so the two clerks haven't had a commiserate increase. "We need to recognize the value of long-term employees and...
Wahkiakum County commissioners acted on a variety of business issues when they met Tuesday. Commissioner Dan Cothren gave an update on efforts to place sand on eroding Cape Horn and Puget Island beaches. Two agreements are tied up in reviews in the Seattle office of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cothren said. He and Portland Corps officials have voiced frustration with the amount of time the agreements have been under consideration, Cothren said. Cothren and Cape Horn residents entertained a visit from a staff member of Senator Maria...
Puget Island-Westport ferry service is closed until 5 a.m. April 30 to complete ramp upgrades. The Island ramp wasn't designed to mesh with the new ferry, the "Oscar B;" it was built when the "Wahkiakum" was in service. Service will resume after modifications to the Westport ramp are completed. Photo by Rick Nelson....
Editor’s note: Recently, there has been discussion in our communities about changing the names of geographical features in the Brookfield area. The features incorporate the name Jim Crow, which has several historical references, most notably to the system of segregation and oppression of African Americans. The names most likely stem from the presence of an African American who lived and worked along the lower Columbia, Jim Saules. Eagle Reporter Diana Zimmerman went looking for background on Sau...
To all Wahkiakum County land owners: The proposed Shoreline Management Program rules, if enacted, will affect a majority of us. The Dept of Ecology will control your land, not you. Note the following Shoreline Management Program Definitions and Excerpts taken from the Final Draft, ready to be presented to the Commissioners. Add up the set-back distances- you won’t have any land left. While there is still time, tell Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Mike Backman to reject it. Shorelines: All shoreline of streams or rivers having a mean annual flow o...
To The Eagle: Modern hi-tech dentistry has come to Cathlamet! Locally I recently had a broken crown replaced. Much of the variable art of human artisans has been replaced with the perfection and precision of the computer. The computer reads and collects a record of all the pits, grooves, bumps and every variable of the tooth that makes up the grinding surfaces of the tooth that one uses to chew food. The new tooth, when glued into place, matches the opposing surface perfectly. No back and forth to the lab, and a 10-day wait, and then the...
To The Eagle: I had to shake my head after reading the article in the Eagle’s 04/21 paper titled “ I wish I was a Democrat.” The sarcasm coming from the writer seems to be fear based (for obvious reasons), and reflecting an inability to see the big picture. I/we increasingly hear this divisive rhetoric as our much needed Republican party self-implodes. For the record, I am an Independent voter. I’ve voted both sides of the aisle over the years, at the federal as well as state levels, depending on the candidate and the responsibilities at stak...
To The Eagle: I did not go to meetings in regards to the new junk/waste ordinance. I did not feel that it applied to me. I also voted against the ordinance. The ordinance basically says that your neighbors have a right to not have to look at anything that they feel is junk on your property. But it actually does not matter who is offended by something on your property, anyone can file a claim against anyone. This is a county ordinance, but you only have to comply if someone files a complaint against you. I think that everyone in the county...
To the Eagle: We don’t need to memorialize “Jim Crow” with a place name in Wahkiakum County. Removing artifacts of racism is a way to acknowledge that we are moving on from the racist history that Oregon (and this country) is still living down. See the Oregon Historical Society’s Encyclopedia of Oregon for a summary of exclusion laws, and the complicated history regarding slavery. Until 1926, it was illegal for black people to move into the state. How we talk and what words we use convey our attitudes to our children and grandchildren. If name...
BIG CHANGE--Last weekend we saw clouds, rain, wind, hail and a dash of sun, so there was a little bit of everything! Oh well, you know what they say about April showers! I have to admit, many of my "May flowers" that had already bloomed and were in the last stages of showing off their flashy colors, were definitely done in after a heavy hail storm came through late Sunday afternoon and just pounded the blooms off my camelia, rhododendren and azalea bushes. HOT CAR WARNING--It was sunnier in some places last week than here and once again, we...

Wow! April is over and May is beginning. That means we only have three months until fair. There is going to be a lot of construction going on at the fairgrounds this summer. We will be getting the new bathrooms thanks to a grant from WSDA. Also the county and PUD are going to do some electric upgrades and there will be some insulation going in to the youth building soon. A couple weeks ago I gave you a fair theme; at the Fair Board’s last meeting it was changed so the 2016 fair theme is "Catch The Fair Bug.” May brings lots to do at the fai...

Last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Mule baseball team put an end to the Toledo Indians' perfect season, splitting games in a double header. The games had originally been scheduled for Friday but were moved forward due to the weather forecast. The Mules lost the first game 1-2, despite a home run from Zach Brown. James Anderson pitched the entire game and took the loss. He struck out six batters, and allowed five hits and two runs, one of which was earned. The Mules won the second game 7-4. Terris...
The Wahkiakum Mule golf team lost a heartbreaker 208-207 to Adna on Monday but beat Napavine at Neuwakum Valley Golf Course moving their intra-conference record to 19-8. Mules Bryce Good shot 46 and Sarah Shi 47 as they finished second and third in the 13 player event and both had great ball striking days. Bryce four-putted the last green, and Sarah chipped over three greens from short range to log three double bogeys, letting Adna's Logan Boone capture medalist honors with a 44. Tyler St. Onge shot 55, Zach Johnston 60, Connor Thompson 62 and...
