Students bounced into the JC Thomas Middle School gymnasium Friday afternoon clad in brightly colored t-shirts and carrying signs to promote their favorite candidate. Associated Student Body (ASB) elections were in full swing last week. The halls were decorated with catchy slogans and glitter-covered signs. Students wore t-shirts and stickers advertizing their votes. Candidates went into classrooms to promote their campaigns and pass out goodies in hopes of winning over their peers. It all came down to the speeches Friday morning where one by...
Olivia Stahn wanted to see the countryside while she traveled the United States, so she spent a week volunteering at Carol Carver and George Exum’s Island’s End Farm on Puget Island. Stahn, a resident of Berlin, Germany, explained that she had grown up in the countryside and longed for more time away from city life. Eating organic foods are important to many Germans, said Stahn, adding that the country as a whole had been ecologically minded for many years. Stahn and Carver first communicated through the website of World Wide Opportunities on O...

The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is putting together a plan that will yield Wahkiakum County government just over $1 million per year for the next three years in revenue from state managed trust timber land. DNR officials reviewed the plans Tuesday with Wahkiakum commissioners Dan Cothren and Blair Brady (Commissioner Lisa Marsyla was absent because of family illness). The timber trust revenue is an important part of the revenue for the county's Current Expense Fund, which finances most county offices. St. Helens District...
Commissioners from Clatsop, Columbia and Wahkiakum counties on Tuesday discussed salmon fishery and other issues with representatives of the Fish and Wildlife Departments of Washington and Oregon. WDFW Regional Manager Guy Norman reported that officials have decided to close sport and commercial fishing for spring chinook at least until May when update return numbers may lead to more fishing. The fall chinook fishery will be limited on the lower portion of the Columbia he said, but managers think the overall fall return will be strong. WDFW...
Standing at the starting line, amidst thousands of the world's top runners, one can only think of the many miles that have led to this single race. Steeped in tradition, the Boston Marathon ranks among the most prestigious road-racing events on earth. Seasoned runners aspire to run a fast enough “qualifying time” to even be able to toe the starting line here. Annie Strange, a mother of three boys, from Naselle achieved this grandiose goal last week. “I am grateful to have had the chance to experience it,” Strange said of the running of the 116t...
To The Eagle: The town of Cathlamet and its library committee have concluded that a good temporary location for the library during town hall remodeling would be up in the Shell station plaza on SR4. A couple of weeks ago, the mayor presented the county commissioners an elegant idea: if the county would be willing to waive its hookup fees to the legendary "Sewer to Nowhere" that lies a-molderin' in the ground by Boege Road, then the mall would be able to hook up to it, preempting any potential sewer problems caused by the library's tenancy. But...
