The Wahkiakum Mule baseball team struggled to get the bats going last Wednesday night against Napavine, falling 7-0 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 13-2. The Mules tallied just four hits in the opener, two from Lars Blix and one apiece from Dallas Peacock and Gunnar Blix. Things got a little better offensively for the Mules in the second game, notably Gunnar Blix’s pair of hits, including a home run. Peacock, Lars Blix, Travis Wegdahl, and Mason Mackey all picked up singles in the losing effort. The losses dropped the Mules to 5-5 i...
Last week, the Mule Softball team moved a regularly scheduled Thursday game up a day due to the weather forecast. The young team lost to Napavine 19-0 in the first game of the double header. Dallas Gott pitched until she was leveled by a line drive to the knee. Haylee Budd hit a double; Tori Wegdahl, who replaced Gott on the mound, had a single, as did Shanna Havens. The second game proved to be as much a heartbreaker as the first, the team losing to Napavine 17-0. Tori Wegdahl hit a triple,...
SUN HAS ARRIVED-- After a wet, windy and often cold weekend with a spattering of sunshine here and there, it looks like we finally have a few days of warmth in our region and it's sure a welcome sight. I think my old bones were about to permanently seize up from being so cold all the time, so when the sun finally showed up, all I could do was soak up the light and heat- warmth at last! I did get to soak up the sun, but it wasn't by kicking back and enjoying it, as the flower beds beckoned and so it was warmth via sweating while I yanked and...

State funding for basic education is based on enrollment. The district started the school year with an average of 403.4 full time equivalent (FTE) students. It reached a high of 415.2 in November and has been...
Wahkiakum County's oldest food bank is looking for space. Started over 30 years ago by churches in the Skamokawa and Cathlamet areas, the Wahkiakum Food Bank operates Tuesday afternoons in a room at the county Health and Human Services (H&HS) campus on the Elochoman Valley Road. That room was created by walling off a bay in a garage, and food bank operators say it's inadequate for their needs. They asked the county board of commissioners to help them find other quarters on the campus. Commissioners Dan Cothren and Mike Backman said they would l...

A German émigré who settled on the outskirts of Skamokawa four years ago is living the dream. Ursula Petralia worked in offices for 40 years in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri so that one day she could live on 80 acres in an old farmhouse and provide refuge for abandoned animals. It started with dogs, which soon became a kind of love affair with Anatolian Sheep Dogs, beasts born to protect and big enough to take down a wolf or a bear. They can and they do. Just not at Ursula’s h...

Wahkiakum County commissioners formally rejected the one bid they received last week to build a new ferry. US Fabrication bid $8.5 million for the project, well above the engineer's estimate of $4.3 million. In a letter to the board, Public Works Director Pete Ringen said he wanted to put the project out to bid again, but first, he wants to investigate some of the issues that might have led to the difference between the bid and the estimate. The bidder had requested a longer bid period because they're working on a bid for another project,...

To The Eagle: I have decided not to seek a second term as Cathlamet’s mayor. Though I love the work and believe my time in office has been productive, family obligations require that I spend considerable time outside Wahkiakum County over the next few years. Our town needs a fully-devoted chief executive, and I am confident that our election process will produce one willing to meet the challenges. Contested elections are the lifeblood of our system. They introduce fresh ideas, bring new people into political life and give citizens a voice in go...
We had one more trip to the ER, this time for low heart rate and low blood pressure, an overnight stay at St. John’s and came home again on Tuesday with a pacemaker. We hope this will be the last hospital trip for a while. The nurses and staff doctors are on a first-name basis with both of us lately, and we certainly appreciate them and the care they have provided during our visits. Thank you everyone for all your kindness, support, and friendship through this long and tiring journey. We certainly look forward to a calm period for a while. N...
