    A group of local men and women may soon be certified to help the public in case of emergency. The Wahkiakum County emergency medical technician (EMT) class had 17 students complete a course in EMT certification on April 11. From January until April, students spent Tuesday and Thursday evenings and every other Saturday in classes held at the Wahkiakum Fire Hall for a total of 150 hours.   • WSDOT plans safety work on SR 4, SR 401

    The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract for improvements to highways SR 4 and SR 401 this summer. The project will make safety improvements to the highway corridors in Pacific, Wahkiakum, and Cowlitz counties. The department has planned the improvements to reduce the severity of collisions where motorists have driven off the roadway.     More than a year ago, with about 50 boxes of library books, donated by the Friends of the Bend Library in Bend, Oregon, a huge project began to unfold in Rosburg. A public and free library for the west end of Wahkiakum County was envisioned by a few interested volunteers, as well as many residents.     Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie told the board of commissioners this week he is searching for a back-up transformer for the Grays River/Westend system. Tramblie reported that over the last year he has explored options of connecting the distribution systems between Cathlamet and Grays River and between Pacific County PUD and Wahkiakum PUD. Work to connect either system could cost the utility $500,000.     A Long Beach man died April 16 when the recyling truck he was driving ran off SR 101. The driver was Brian Keith Shaffer, 36, of Long Beach. He was driving a 1995 recycling truck. He was wearing a seatbelt. The accident occurred at 1:59 p.m. 12 miles northwest of Naselle. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, the truck was southbound and ran off the road when the front right tire blew out.     Wahiakum County commissioners want to discuss repairs to Kandoll Road with the Columbia Land Trust before repairing damage that occurred in last January's floods. Public Works Director Pete Ringen said funds are available from the Federal Emergency Management Administration to pay for the work, but there's no guarantee that the next high water won't cause the same damage.     Wahkiakum County officials may decide next week to ask voters to approve formation of a hospital district to assume control of the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic.
