  • Lots to do during Easter weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

GORGEOUS--As this week began, it was absolutely beautiful with nothing but sunshine and warm breezes, which felt oh so great! Actually, the entire weekend and even several days last week were great too, as my aching back can attest, as there were no bad weather excuses to put off digging into those flower beds! However, it looks like we'll all get to use the weather as an excuse by the time you read this, as more wet weather is due to move in, so I hope you got that lawn mowed and those new plants in the ground, as it's going to be time to...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Representatives from Pacific County PUD attended Tuesday morning’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting to share their experience and knowledge in setting up a telecom system. Pacific County PUD has two offices, one in Long Beach and the other in Raymond. Initially, they needed a connection that would give both offices access to information in real time. They turned to fiber optics, eventually extending the infrastructure to each of their 10 substations. With the excess c...

  • Port 2 lines up boat, park projects

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Staff of Port District No. 2 continue to address two major projects for 2014. Commissioners on Tuesday approved consultant Karen Bertroch's plans to pursue grant support for their effort to create a display space for an historic Columbia River gillnet boat. Bertroch estimates the project will cost close to $40,000. She said she has two like funders that could yield $13,000. From there, she'll contact other potential donors to continue the fundraising effort. The port plans to create a display in which viewers may see down into the boat. Port...

Sonar readings requested in June had finally arrived, held up by calibration problems in the equipment used by the surveyors. Commissioner Bob Kizziar shared that he had spoken with a couple congressmen and a senator’s aide at meetings he had recently attended. He related his concerns a...

  • Health department changing Friday hours

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services will revise their Friday office hours starting this week. County commissioners on Tuesday approved a recommendation from Administrator Sue Cameron, who proposed closing the department's office in the Courthouse Annex on Fridays. No services would be lost, and there would be no cost savings, she said, but there would be efficiencies "gained by concentrating staff on one campus and eliminating the need to have staff travel back and forth between offices to work with the public or manage projects." Two...

  • Grand reopening set for Saturday

    Apr 16, 2014

Wahkiakum Port District #2 will host a Grand Reopening of County Line Park on Saturday, April 26 from 1-3 p.m. Located along the shore of the Columbia River between Longview and Cathlamet, County Line Park has long been popular for fishing and overnight camping. Attractive for its proximity for watching ships passing by, and for a sandy beach for fishing along the river, the park is a busy place most of the year. The Park is owned by Wahkiakum County, but Port District #2 now operates the park after Cowlitz County decided they no longer wanted...

  • County dispatchers deal with outage

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Wahkiakum County dispatchers apparently didn't miss any calls for emergency assistance when CentruyLink's emergency dispatching services went down statewide last week. Joannie Bjorge, chief civil deputy in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office, and regional dispatch center administrators will get together to discuss the outage. "There's a lot of discontent in the 9-1-1 world about CenturyLink," Bjorge told the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. CenturyLink didn't notify the county that the system was down, Bjorge said;...

  • Columbia's past comes to life with miniature train

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Former Mayor Dick Swart and his wife Dixie live in a house on the hill. They used to have three normal cats and an odd one named George. George lived to the ripe old age of 26 and would proudly preen while his veterinarian paraded students past the perfect specimen of Felis Catus. But this story isn’t about George. It’s about a love for trains and friends and history and art. The house was built in the mid-thirties, this much they know. They have a copy of the building plans, but it can’t be au...

  • CenturyLink reports call outage numbers

    Apr 16, 2014

SEATTLE (AP) -- About 4,500 calls failed to get through during a six-hour Washington state 911 outage last week, CenturyLink said Monday. Elaborating on an explanation it offered Friday, the telecommunications company said the outage was caused by a technical error in a third-party vendor's call router, which prevented the system from properly processing calls. In one case early Thursday, an Everett, Wash., woman said she made 37 calls about an intruder breaking into her home and had to drive him away herself with a knife. The problem did not...

  • County should allow legal marijuana cultivation

    Apr 16, 2014

To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County should permit the legal cultivation of marijuana and do so without further delay. Clearly, interest groups – including law enforcement and teen health advocates – favor a permanent ban, though it is unclear how that outcome would lower teen exposure to marijuana given that it will be grown elsewhere in the state and sold legally to adults. Two elements of the current debate concern me. First, opponents of cultivation are offering a one-sided analysis of the costs to our community. They say law...

  • Kids' Easter egg hunt Saturday in Naselle

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 16, 2014

Spring is definitely in the air with the smell of cherry blossoms, fresh mown grass, and many of the wildflowers beginning to bloom. The dogs are shedding their winter coats, and if you brush them outside and leave the fur, the birds are in a mad rush to pick it up and carry it off. A few butterflies are even appearing, and the hummingbird feeder needs to be refilled frequently. Nature sure has a beautiful way of beginning new life in the spring. News from Naselle Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday (today), track at North...
