    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

WAS NICE--We had a pretty nice weekend, although there was rain in the middle of the night on Saturday, but that was okay because it was sunny during the daylight hours and that's all that mattered to most of us. But now the work week has begun and so did the rain. It's this kind of weather that makes things grow like crazy, unless they drown! Let's hope we see the return of the sunshine real soon! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 15-21 are Janine Helms, Bryan Ledtke, Dan Keilwitz, Lori Smith, Floyd McClane, Brock Cothren,...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Apr 15, 2010

The weather was perfect, we had good signs to direct people, and flyers advertising the Fair & 4-H Rummage Sale posted all over the county. This and the fact we all love a big rummage sale, made for a very successful one. We thank our community for the wonderful items that they donated! The youth building was full of these treasures and we sold them at affordable prices. It was like going back 10 years in time, when the fair rummage sale was a part of our summers. It was a social gathering for all who came to shop, a place to spend a few...

  • Opinions vary on national heritage area

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

Sponsors of a feasibility study on a proposal to form a regional national heritage area received full spectrum of opinion at a public hearing Tuesday evening in Cathlamet. Some speakers said they felt the proposal would benefit the area's economy; others claimed it was an unconstitutional land grab. The impetus to form a national heritage area came out of the region's efforts to observe the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery. Proponents felt the national heritage program would make the region known for its particular...

  • Land use board rejects LNG plan

    Apr 15, 2010

The past two weeks have been a step forward, and a step backward for NorthernStar's proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas plant permitting process. On April 12, for the second time, the Oregon Land Use Appeals (LUBA) board rejected Clatsop County's approval of the Bradwood Landing LNG terminal across the Columbia River from Cathlamet and Puget Island. The Associated Press reported that the state board of appeals sent the case back to Clatsop County to resolve questions over whether the project is too big for the site, and whether enou...

  • Commissioners: Timber market up, planners appointed

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

An upswing in the timber market could mean an increase in revenue from state managed county trust timber land, county officials learned Tuesday. In other business, commissioners filled two planning commission vacancies and rejected a District Court voucher for security guard training. Marcus Johns, regional manager of the Department of Natural Resources, which manages the harvest of timber of county trust lands, said timber markets have improved and county timber sales will produce more revenue than forecast a few months ago. Revenue from...

  • Census: We'll get back to you

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

Coordinators of the 2010 US Census have a response for Wahkiakum County residents who haven't yet received a questionnaire: We'll get back to you. Census workers have mailed forms to residences, but forms addressed to post office boxes were never delivered. Postal officials emailed workers in post offices to say that the letters should be returned because census workers want to make sure that one questionnaire went to one residence, and that control was impossible to maintain through use of post office boxes. Postal workers weren't allowed to...

  • National heritage areas contain hidden pitfalls

    Apr 15, 2010

To The Eagle: Heritage area??? Be very cautious in anything called special planning area, heritage area, etc. What it does is eventually form another layer of bureaucracy in the use of your property. Example: Apply for building permit with county. County determines it could be in heritage area, then it goes to that board who then takes years for that board to decide if it is in the heritage area or will have impact on same. In other areas with like heritage or whatever they may be called districts, it is not unusual to take five to eight years...

  • Labels should be chosen carefully

    Apr 15, 2010

To The Eagle: Re: Chuck Wolfe's letter published April 8, 2010. It is obvious that Mr. Wolfe is unhappy with the current situation in Washington DC, as well as here in Washington state. This doesn't come as a surprise, there are many people upset with the recent legislation passed by our elected representatives. True, you may not have voted for them, but they are still your elected representatives, just as G. W. Bush was my president for a time. What I do find surprising is that he would openly label himself as a "brownshirt." The Meriam-Webste...

  • GRHED candidate's credentials important

    Apr 15, 2010

To The Eagle: Was it necessary to edit out the fact that Grays River Habitat Enhancement District candidate Delvin Fredrickson worked at the Livermore Radiation Lab? Background/resumé --Education: Graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1959; two years military service in the Army as a paratrooper; and continued with four years of college. --Business/professional: Worked as a journeyman plasterer...

  • Accurate census count critical for county funds

    Apr 15, 2010

To The Eagle: The census system doesn't make sense, or is at the least flawed! After we did not receive a census form in the mail, upon inquiry to our County Auditor Diane Tischer, I was kindly informed that a census form could be obtained from the office of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce located at the Scarborough Building on Main Street. Later Bob Hendrickson volunteered that he and Margie had also been ignored by the census and he had seen an out-of-town news article that said people with post office boxes instead of home mail delivery...

  • Stevan's back; let's shoot photos

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

Eagle readers don't miss much, and I like that. It will be easy to notice that we have an article by reporter Stevan Morgain. His stories and photos have been missing since January. It seems that last fall, his doctors told him he had a tumor on a kidney, and he needed surgery to remove the tumor. The good news was that the tumor wasn't malignant; the bad news was it would be a long, rough road to recovery. We're pleased that he's getting there. For the past two weeks, we've been publicizing a photo contest, "A Day in the Life of Wahkiakum and...
